Publisher's summary

Parents act as a mirror to show a child who she or he is. Throughout childhood there will be other mirrors, but children inevitably return to the reflection in that original mirror in order to determine their goodness, importance, and self-worth. In Healing Your Emotional Self, Beverly Engle offers her highly effective Mirror Therapy program to help you reject the distorted images your parents either intentionally or unintentionally projected onto you. She explores the seven types of emotionally abusive or neglectful parents and the seven most common parental mirrors, providing specific advice and recovery strategies for each one.

Helping you raise your self-esteem and improve your self-image, this innovative step-by-step program provides you with the skills you need to:

  • Create a positive self-image separate from your abusive parents' distorted picture
  • Separate emotionally from your parents and provide for yourself what you missed as a child
  • Discover who you really are – including your likes, dislikes, values, goals, and dreams – by creating a word self-portrait and using other Mirror Therapy techniques
  • Overcome your tendency toward self-blame, self-hatred, and self-destructiveness
  • Learn self-nurturing and set effective limits to help you control your tendency to overeat, drink too much, overspend, and/or overwork
  • Become the person you are meant to be by being more accepting of yourself

Learn to love who you see in the mirror with the breakthrough program found in Healing Your Emotional Self.

A Must read for healing trauma

I have a diverse exposure to many healing approaches. This comprehensive guide to implicating a mirror into your healing, really ties together modern and primitive methods. For people struggling to get into therapy with a trauma certified therapist that creates a safe relationship to approach healing, I say this book can help you do the foot work. Take it slow, though, and if you have discernment to take a break from the material if you’re triggered, this is the book you’ve been looking for!

The PDF needs to be fixed ASAP

This book is excellent and exactly what I needed. I felt both validated and triggered the whole way through. I am going to use it to change my life.
However the pdf only has one paragraph and leads you unable to do the assessments and exercises.
I did order the paperback book to do it myself.
Thank you to the author for her work! It is very helpful to many!

Great journal prompts

I started listening to this as an extra book on inner child healing. I found immediately that I wanted to take notes. And I really enjoyed the prompts she gives for doing the inner work! As an Art Therapist & Counselor I recommend other Art Therapists and counselors listen/read this book as it will help you with exercises to have clients do.

Great book but missing the accompanying PDF

I’m finding this book really helpful, however it would be better if the PDF that goes with it was actually available. As it is there is only one paragraph when clicking on the PDF link in the chapters section.

Someone finally said “it”

She says what most won’t but she says it without malice or spite. I always wondered if I had been terribly abused and neglected as a child. My inner critic said, of course not, stupid. Other kids had it much worse. Turns out, I had it pretty bad. I just needed to hear which things were messed up and she finally tells what behaviors from my parents or others caused me harm. I didn’t need to wallow but I needed someone to finally say it wasn’t okay. I have been to see counselors and therapists and I often left feeling like the abuse and neglect were my fault and that I was a worse child than I even thought I was. Thank you for finally saying it!

Narrator was difficult to listen to

I needed to listen to this book and I went back to it again and again … starting and giving up after a chapter or two. The narrator’s voice and delivery was grating to listen to.
