Publisher's summary

"Sharp, atmospheric, and wildly fast-paced"—Jessica Goodman, New York Times bestselling author of They'll Never Catch Us

From the author of Lies Like Wildfire comes another thriller about the little lies we all tell before the truth sets us free—perfect for fans of Karen M. McManus and Diana Urban.

Mistake number one . . .

Fun-loving Jake tells his girlfriend, Jessica, that they have to go to Tegan’s end-of-summer party in their tiny California beach town. Jessica doesn’t like parties, and she doesn’t like Tegan, who has an obvious, obsessive crush on Jake. But she agrees to go, to make Jake happy.

Mistake number two . . .

Something awful happens at the party. Something so embarrassing that Jessica doesn’t know if she can ever get over it—and Jake will do whatever it takes to earn her forgiveness. And now a girl is missing. Everyone is a suspect. And Jake seems to have a lot to hide. . . .

When a body is discovered at the beach, friends start turning on friends, and lies start piling upon lies. What happened could destroy their lives. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer? Mistake number three . . .

Enjoyable from beginning to end

I like to take a break from regular Murder Mystery to young adult MM from time to time when books get a little too heavy - bc it’s still my favorite category. This book fit the bill! Very entertaining, well written & mature.

Fitting Title Name

Betrayal, love, break ups, missing persons…….it’s all there. The title of the book really fits the story. I thought I outgrew young adult books 30 years ago but I find them more gripping now than adult books.

It’s was an okay story

It was horrible and for the most part kept my attention. I just felt the story was a bit boring.

Good enough to listen twice

this book was so good I listened for a second time a couple months later. it shows the complexity of friendships and the heartache over and friendships go wrong. also discusses that even boys can suffer sexual trauma.

Engaging mystery

4.5 STARS

A live feed catches Jessica’s boyfriend Jake having sex with his ex Teagan. Then she goes missing. A drunken Jake remembers nothing about the night and Jess can’t forget what she saw. Is Teagan missing or did she run away to escape the consequences of the video?

Jessica Lynn Alvarez kept me guessing about Teagan’s fate and who did what to whom. The tension never lets up as readers find out FRIENDS LIKE THESE finishes the cliché that explains why the term is apt.
