Publisher's summary

A stolen bride. A terrifying bridegroom. The game that will determine their fates.

No one told her the most important law of the court - the law of greeting. If they had, maybe she wouldn't have greeted Bluebeard when he arrived to claim a mortal wife. And if she hadn't greeted him, she wouldn't have become his 16th wife or been swept away to the lands of the Wittenhame.

But if none of that had happened, then she wouldn't have been an integral part of the game that takes place every 200 years - a game that determines the fates of nations. For, not all is as it seems - not in her homeland of Pensmoore, not in the Wittenhame, and certainly not in her new marriage.

For lovers of Spinning Silver, Oath Taker, and The Bear and the Nightingale comes a tangled fantasy story of faeries, epic adventure, magical trickery, and wagers of crowns and thrones from USA Today best-selling author Sarah K. L. Wilson.

Prepare to be enthralled, spell-bound, and utterly addicted to this chillingly hopeful tale.

Loved the story, but wanted a broader perspective

Wilson's voice in this (and other books) is just fantastic. It fits the fairy-tale retelling to perfection. The narration was also smooth and fitting for the main character's voice.

I actually would rate the story 4.5 stars, reduced by 1/2 because I wanted the male perspective here too. This is, at its heart, a romance, and I felt like I was being kept away from one of the characters. This may have been intentional to not give away too much of the motivation, but I felt like things were unnecessarily hidden.

Otherwise, plot, pacing, the whimsical feel, everything worked very well for me. The story continues, but the ending wraps up nice enough that I'm not compelled to go on and nor do I feel like I'm not content with the ending (as I do in some other series).

I NEED BOOK TWO!

I started reading this book on Kindle, and ended up signing up for audible again just so that I could finish listening to it during the day.

I enjoyed it much! Izolda as a character is aware, almost narating her own story, teasing at her own mistakes.
Bluebeard is memorable as well, almost a tortured character, obviously hiding his own secrets.

It ends on a cliffhanger, however, and I'm so frustrated at that!

Interesting take on Bluebeard legend

Kind of felt slow to start but picked up toward the end. The romance felt a bit odd to me, because she keeps calling him a murderer but still ends up falling for him. I get that when the guy redeems himself, but she was super focused on his appearance and not much else. Still thought it was pretty good. Really like the talking head.

WOW!

This story had me sitting on the edge of my seat for most of it. There were so many twists and turns that it was hard to keep track of them all. I love Ozolda's strength and tenacity. Bluebeard is a strange and intriguing character and d I can't wait to see what has happened next!

Surprising

I wasn’t expecting much since I saw this book as a Facebook recommendation. Facebook seems to recommend…. Questionable (at best) choices but I did love spinning silver and this was compared to that. It’s hard to give a full review because the story isn’t over yet (waiting for the next book) but this book was definitely captivating. It has no problems holding my attention

Such a fail ,not worth reading

This story could of been great. The concept was there. But the writer never took the effort to make it great. It was a hard book to get through. The story just dragged and there was just no beauty in what could of been the best creative story . This writer didn't use her imagination to the fullest. I wasted half of a day trying to get through the thing. Over all this book didn't live up to the expectations. 🤮

Abrupt ending

The overall story was great and thr narrator did a good job trying to paint a picture however I felt like this book had an abrupt ending that left me going "what just happened?"
