An Interesting Medley

As might be expected, this collection of short stories ranges quite broadly in topics and lengths. I didn't love them all, but a couple were solid backstory for familiar parts of the Kunsken universe, and one "Tool Use by the Humans of Danzhai County" I thought was excellent.

I really hope the author eventually expands on the AI notions and themes from Tool Use, where AIs perhaps turn out to be more human than homo sapiens has been.

Flight from the Ages Another Winner

I normally avoid short stories but Kunsken is one of my favorite authors so I tried this selection. He got to me again.

Really engaging short stories!

If you've read his other work before this you'll definitely see where those stories originated. The deep-sea and kite stories were my favourites but they were all worth listening to!

Glad I dove in

While every story in this collection is intriguing and worth the listen, Tool Use By Humans of Danzhai County is likely the most emotionally impactful story I’ve encountered, and the sci-fi aspect just makes it that much better. I had tears in my eyes at the close. So darn good, I love this author’s work

Excellent short story collection

Entertaining, well crafted, stories. Although they all fit into the universe Derek created in the Quantum Engineers series, they can all be enjoyed individually as self contained narratives.

Thus was a great series if short stories.

I loved all the different stories tied to the same universe. This was a great way to expand on the series as well as introduce different ideas that added nuance to existing work.

Tool Use[…] Is the best sci-fi I’ve read this year

And I read a lot of hard sci-fi…
The stories improve as the collection progresses and the last one is a doozy. Amazing

Really great stories all around

Only thing I didn't like about this book is that it had to end! Really nice mix of vastly different Sci Fi stories, with superb narration. 👍👍

Highly recommended??

I found this collection of stories a bit overly technical, disconnected, and difficult to follow story, and plots.

terrible

this was described as a collection of short story, but it is not. rather, it is a collection of incomplete story fragments with complex, unexplained, unfinished plot lines.
