Publisher's summary

We think we understand the laws of physics.

We think a lot of things. It was perhaps inevitable that some of them would turn out to be wrong.

When the great incursion occurred, no one was prepared. Of all the things physicists had predicted, "the fabric of reality might rip open and giant monsters could come pouring through" had not made the list. But somehow, that was precisely what happened.

For sisters Susan and Katharine Black, the day of the incursion was the day they lost everything. Their home, their parents, their sense of normalcy . . . and each other, because when the rift opened, each sister was stranded in a separate form of reality. For Susan, it was science and study and the struggle to solve the mystery of the altered physics inside the zones transformed by the incursion. For Katharine, it was monsters and mayhem and the fight to stay alive in a world unlike the world of her birth.

The world has changed. The laws of physics have changed. The girls have changed. And the one universal truth of all states of changed matter is that nothing can be completely restored to what it was originally, no matter how much you might wish it could be.

Nothing goes back.

New universe begging for more stories!

Loved this one. Let's hope it's only #1 of a new series! Narrator only makes it better.

Top notch horror

Mira takes you to places you never expected to go. The horror in this novel comes far more from the humans involved than the monsters. One thing I truly enjoy about her writing is that even in horror there are often hints of hope to be found. The narrator did an excellent job of giving voice to the characters. Each one felt unique and identifiable. The sense of tension she created was great. In the end this is a story of familial bonds and boundaries that we refuse to cross. Ms Grant is one of the best horror authors of our time, pick up the book you’ll enjoy it.

No spoilers

Mira Grant never disappoints—even in such a short story she created an entire full world with characters that are well rounded & interesting. The narrator was superb & captured all the nuances. Loved it!!!

good quickie

I love how Mira Grant makes up new universes with new rules in all of her novels, this is no different. That being said this is a quickie. I loved it but I'm hungry for another in depth story like we got qorh Newsflesh and Feed.

spoilers ahead

Excellent story as usual

It started off a little slow for me but once I was in it I couldn't stop! I nearly listened to it all in one go and probably would have if I hadn't kept getting calls at work lol

Feels like book 0.5 of an upcoming trilogy

Mira Grant’s Square3 has the feel of a prequel to a trilogy that was needed to fill in some background information. Something strange has happened around the world with random locations getting zapped into some sort of trans dimensional funk. People within those spaces have been trapped. Bizarre Godzilla type creatures first emerged, but now the world has settled down into studying this phenomenon. Two sisters, one on each side, are the main characters with the one on our side having made her life’s work to studying this. She makes contact with her sister and learns that malevolent actors are kidnapping children from inside as they possess special powers forcing the sister to go rogue to save her niece and nephew.

Grant sets up a strange situation without much explanation or scientific basis. There’s an over emphasis on military involvement, along with over-the-top black ops. Hopefully there’s more to follow.

The narration is solid with reasonable character distinction. Pacing is brisk making for a quick listen.
