Publisher's summary

In her 20s, Emily Watson was on top of the world: she had a best-selling novel, a husband plucked from the pages of GQ, and a one-way ticket to happily ever after.

Ten years later, the tide has turned on Emily's good fortune.

So when her great-Aunt Bee invites her to spend the month of March on Bainbridge Island in Washington State, Emily accepts, longing to be healed by the sea. Researching her next book, Emily discovers a red velvet diary, dated 1943, whose contents reveal startling connections to her own life.

A mesmerizing debut with an idyllic setting and intriguing dual story line, The Violets of March announces Sarah Jio as a writer to watch.

Based in Seattle, she's been the health and fitness blogger for Glamour.com and a contributor to major magazines, including Real Simple, Redbook, O, The Oprah Magazine, Cooking Light, Glamour, SELF, Health, American Baby, and many others.

poorly written fluff

This would have been a great book if it had been written by someone else. The idea behind the thing is a good one, really intriguing. The prose is very labored. It comes across as trite. I found myself cringing often. Save your credits.

REALLY?

I did try, really, I did. But after about 2 hours I had to stop. As a few previous reviewers have said, this book reads like a teenage romance novel. Although the two eighty-year-olds (Bee and Evelyn) who are introduced in the early pages are depicted as "hip," they both sound exactly alike and behave like cliche old ladies. Emily, the protagonist, was described as a best-selling author, but she was so shallow, it was impossible to imagine. I had to speed up (thanks Audible for that feature) the narrator as her narration was so slow I felt she must be reading for the very elderly. I see this was Jio's debut novel and that she has published numerous books since. I presume her writing has improved!

confusing

I am finding this very confusing to listen to and cannot get thru it. Many people whose names start with E and it is hard to keep it straight. Not going to be able to wade thru it.
