Publisher's summary

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

Critic reviews

  • Alex Award Winner, 2004

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." Just brilliant

So emotional to listen to, but so well written and so well performed. So much better than the movie too!

You will not be disappointed!

I am so happy that I gave this audible a chance. I have seen the movie and the HBO series. I’ve always really wondered what happened in the books but never had the time to read them. It took me a couple weeks to finish the Audible but it was worth every second. Claire and Henry’s love is one you hope and long for yourself. The narration was better than the actors in the movies. I would love to see a spin off of the book. Featuring the characters in the in chapters.

what?!

it's a great story, but the end leave so much space for more story. it's as though the author got tired and just ended it. I see it as lazy. The adultery stops the plot, not progress it. Author has yet to follow up with time traveller's daughter that could round out this story much better then was achieved with this book.

hard to put down

If you cry easily, you will need a large box of tissues. I listened to this story several months ago, and I still think about it. It reminds me of other stories, notably Outlander, but this one is unique. It was also *very* hard to put down.

Excellent story and narration

Both narrators were excellent. I love how the story was told in turns between them. The story itself was great. Even having previously seen the movie, I enjoyed the story very much.

Loved it again!

I read it years ago and was not disappointed in listening to it. I have gotten spoiled with listening. I only have to work on the movie in my minds eye and enjoy.

One of the most well read and interesting books

Where does The Time Traveler's Wife rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

First, I was afraid the premise was going to be hard to follow. Not at all. The author executed the story beautifully given the "broken" timeline. The reading was exceptional. This is the best read audio book so far in my library.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Time Traveler's Wife?

I can't say without giving away an important part of the story.

What about Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole ’s performance did you like?

They both were able to voice different characters, both male and female, in such a way that I didn't have to focus on who was supposed to be speaking. Their performance was easy to mentally visualize.

Any additional comments?

This was a fun listen, very entertaining and not so complicated as to be a chore.

Romantic and sci-fi without sap or aliens!

If you could sum up The Time Traveler's Wife in three words, what would they be?

Intriguing, unique, relatable

What did you like best about this story?

It takes a different approach to time travel and introduces new perspectives, both from the time traveler and those who stay in current time. I also like that it's a sci-fi story but somehow relatable to the everyman.

What about Fred Berman and Phoebe Strole ’s performance did you like?

I thought they really portrayed the true essence of the characters - particularly Phoebe's performance. It was easy to drift in and out of each character as the point of view changed while still remaining in touch with the relationship they had to each other.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several moments touched me. Alba in the art center was a great scene. The letter in the desk at the end made me cry. I don't cry easily.
