Doesn't do it justice

As an avid Outlander fan, this was a must have. The story doesn't disappoint, in fact it is great. The narration got in the way at every turn. Jamie sounds, not only like a country bumpkin, but an IRISH country bumpkin. It would have helped if the narrator had made himself familiar with the character.
Disappointing. Read the book.

Great addition

This book provides a more complete understanding of the respect, loyalty, and friendship between Jamie and John.

Best LJ book so far! Of course, it's half Jamie!

As an admitted Gabaldon/Porter addict, I have to say that my next read of it will be in the hard book form. While the voice of Lord John seemed natural, the voice of Jamie (by both readers) was painfully horrible; too high, tenuous, boorish, uneducated, so unlike the Jamie that we've fallen in love with in Davina Porter's voice. In spite of that, this was the best Lord John novel so far, probably because Jamie was such an integral part of it. Diana is so good at spinning plots with new twists and this book is no different. I love how she weaves characters in from her other novels. Her writing is so strong that it overrides the negatives in the narrating. Overall, it was worth every penny!

i loved the story

other reviewers are right in thay Jamie's tone throughout is surly, making him appear stupid. this is hard to bear. i had to steal myself when he was speaking and try to think of who Jamie is, not the loutish idiot, but the noble intelligent man. however the story and the rest of the narration is good enough to make it worth it.

Narrator hates main character

Would you listen to The Scottish Prisoner again? Why?

Yes, it's a great story despite the narrator making Jamie Frasier sound like a twit. The almost falsetto voice along with an accent as far from the Scottish highlands as it is possible to get made listening hard. Since the other voices were good I can only assume the narrator disliked Jamie and could not be bothered to try to do a good voice. Really too bad...buy it and listen, it's good. And try to imagine a better voice from other renditions

Would you be willing to try another one of Jeff Woodman and Rick Holmes ’s performances?

Not if a Scottish accent is needed

Best of the Lord John series by far

What did you like about this audiobook?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It displayed none of the flaws (too much explicit sex, inability to distinguish some characters) of Brotherhood of the Blade, and as a fan of the Outlander series, I found this book fit into that series beautifully.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

This books fills gaps in the Jamie Fraser story that Claire, as the narrator of the Outlander series could not know. As the reader, I enjoy this added knowledge of the key character.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

I loved the narration. I did not notice at first that there were two voices involved! This undoubtedly made it easier to distinguish the various characters in the book. I applaud the performers for working so well together.

Do you have any additional comments?

There are some elements in the story that seem so fantastical that I actively suspend my disbelief and accept Gabaldon's version of life in the 18th century. I would love to see an afterword to each book that describes those elements of the stories that are based on fact. Or do I need to read The Outlandish Companion?

Can't get enough of John Grey!

Have read all the John Grey books, and just love them. They are such a great addition to the Outlander series, that all of them must be read, or listened to. I love the narration, although Davina Porter is my first choice for Jamie's voice. At any rate, is really worth a listen, and I hope there are more to come.

I love John Gray and Jamie Frazier

I can't wait for John's appearance on Outlander. There friendship and loyalty is refreshing. I hope whom ever is playing John will look like how I see him in my minds eye.

Praise for Gabaldon

Although I love the stories with Jamie and Clair the best because of all the historical detail, this book gave a wonderful view into how Jamie and Gray moved past their history. I loved to see Jamie and his son Will interact. I am looking forward to her next book.

The Bigger Picture

This book definitely gives a bigger picture from the original story. As in life, there is more than one side.

The narrators managed the accents well, helping the reader get into character more so than if they were reading it themselves.

I would have preferred to have a woman narrate the female and child’s part.

Overall narrators flowed nicely, and did not bore or distract the reader, which I have had happen in other audible books.

Definitely recommend this book to anyone reading the Outlanders series, it ties in nicely.
