Couldn't put it down

Loved it. Was excited to see how John's friendship with Jamie came to be what it is today.

The Best of the Lord John Series

I had been plugging along through the Outlander series and enjoying them. When I got to book 7 it features Lord John at the beginning and makes reference to events that occur to him during the brotherhood of the blade. It bothered me that I did not understand the reference, so I took time to listen to the entire Lord John series before continuing. I found that I did not enjoy the Lord John books as much as the Outlander. But the Scottish Prisoner was the best of the series, and provided the most enjoyment. Now I'm back to Outlander.

JAMIE ST HELLWATER

This fills your curiosity about what events befell Jamie and his relationships at Hellwater mingled with undercurrents of continued Jacobite and Irish rebellion. Well read, good Irish accent. Jamie's accent different from Davina Porter's reading, maybe a bit Glaswegian? Ignore that and it's a jolly good yarn.

Better than I dared hope it would be

Would you listen to The Scottish Prisoner again? Why?

Yes! Listening to this made me want to re-listen to Outlander again as well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Scottish Prisoner?

I don't want to be a plot spoiler, so I will just say that the story and characters do not disappoint.

What does Jeff Woodman and Rick Holmes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really liked the different voices and accents. Davina Porter is still my favorite but because the book is told from solely masculine points of view, these two come in close second.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes!!! Many of them...again don't want to plot spoil.

Any additional comments?

Listen to this! If you are missing Outlander like I was, and are afraid to start the Lord John series as I was because you were afraid of getting disappointed, listen to this book. You don't necessarily have to go in order with the Lord John series and this is the perfect way to get back into the world of Outlander.

The audio version makes the story come to life

If you could sum up The Scottish Prisoner in three words, what would they be?

Heartwarming, intriguing, satisfying

What did you like best about this story?

It fills in the details of the missing years of Jamie Fraser's life story not covered in the Outlander series.

Which scene was your favorite?

The first time Jamie really gets to interact with his son

the connection

It brought Me to a deeper connection between the characters JGrey and J Frasier. And of course "Willie". Also brought enough interest to read books on J Grey. "Personal. matter".

Irish accent

What made the experience of listening to The Scottish Prisoner the most enjoyable?

Diana Gabaldon's writing is great as always

How could the performance have been better?

The performance would have better if the reader could have done a Scottish accent instead of the Irish he did. Some people might not notice, but I did and it was irritating to me. I almost decided to return the book and may still do so.

Any additional comments?

Just the accent, I know someone could have read the story the right way. I would have given the performance the highest marks and also the overall rating. The reader did a good job except for Jamie's accent.

Bonnie Tale

I really like this story,. While shorter than Gabaldon ' s Jamie & Claire tomes , the colorful historical detail and character relationships shine in full force . If you've wondered what happened to Jamie while Claire was in med school, this book tells us some of the events that shaped him, and why Lord John and he were friends . We first met Jamie in his early 20's and Lord John when he was in his mid-teens. In this book Jamie is in his thirties and has suffered war, imprisonment and much loss while
Lord John, now a seasoned soldier his late twenties , has suffered his own losses They are forced to pursue a mission together and find more common ground than either realized . The book also gives a more detailed description of Jamie's history with his son, William, If you like the charecters & historical aspect of Gabledon's work this is a good read. if you're interested only in the Jamie/Claire ssga and not the supernatural and historical asoects, you'll get to meet and know so much more about characters that appear in the larger novels

Give the narration a chance!

In the beginning I was irritated by the story (lack of Claire, Jamie et al.) and really missed Davina Porter but once into it I enjoyed the new characters as well as the links back to Claire and family. I got use to the narration and actually started to enjoy it. The accents are off though.
I would recommend this book and will check out other Lord John books to listen to.

Another great story from the OUTLANDER Series.

I enjoyed the story very much. It gave more insight into the lives of Jamie Fraser and Lord John Grey. Especially when this is a time in Jamie's life without Claire.
