Publisher's Summary

From New York Times best-selling author Kimberla Lawson Roby comes the ninth installment in her award-winning Reverend Curtis Black series.

It's been months since Reverend Curtis learned that his wife Charlotte had affairs with two different men, and for now, he continues to be cordial and respectful to her. But he's also made it clear that once their son Matthew graduates high school, he will be filing for divorce. Charlotte, on the other hand, continues to do everything possible to make amends in hopes of saving their marriage.

Unfortunately, Curtis is ready to move on and is being propositioned by a woman who desperately wants to become the next Mrs. Curtis Black. When the situation heads down a path that is frighteningly shocking, could it be the final blow to this once blessed union?

    "Great disappointment..."

I am a long time fan of Mrs. Roby, and I have read all of her books. This is the first time I have ever been disappointed. Curtis Black is no ordinary minister and his wife is not your average first lady. This book never grasped my full attention and the characters were "boring". I kept waiting for something, anything to happen, and it didn't. By the time the book wrapped up I was bitter. I wasted a credit on this. It happens to the best of us. I expected more and felt that this book was rushed. I expected more from the Black family and this seem like a formula that has already been used. Sorry Kimberla, you lost me with this one.

    "Not her best"

This book picks up from the previous book. It lacks umph, and WOW factor.

I guess the church members are not intuitive in this book. When did Charlotte become an alcoholic?

Maybe it was the narrator and not me, I don't know. This one gets 5 stars for snoozer!!!

I am a retired Army veteran and love to read. I like murder mystery, but enjoy nonfiction. I am a long time Star Trek fan.

    "More of the Same"
Would you try another book from Kimberla Lawson Roby and/or Maria Howell?

I love Kimberla Lawson Roby but the Curtis Black stories contain so much of the same drama that it is played out. New charactors and plots are needed. At the end of the book I notice his son has gotten the girlfriend pregnant so the drama continues.

Has The Reverend's Wife turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

It was okay, but the narractor often sound like they had dry mouth.

Could you see The Reverend's Wife being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    No.

What disappointed you about The Reverend's Wife?

The story was boring and poorly written.

What was most disappointing about Kimberla Lawson Roby’s story?

I know this is fiction but the story was simply ridiculous

How could the performance have been better?

I don't think anything could have improved the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    disappointment

    Any additional comments?

This is definitely the worst book I have ever read. I will never buy a book written by this author again. I question how it got published! If I could have rated it a negative star, I would have done so.

"Could the Blacks finally be on track?"

I have loved the trials of the Black family since the first book and now in this latest book, could they finally be on track? I certainly hope not. Curtis shows that he is working to keep his promise to God; or is he? I could feel his struggles that he was having with his faith as he moves towards a decision that could not only upset his youngest child but also his congregation. The book was a wonderful listen and Mrs. Roby did not disappoint, however, Charlotte did work on my nerves with her begging and pleading. I cannot wait to see what the Black family will bring us next.

"I want a gift to have"

I'm amazed at the writing of this author she is totally blessed with the gift I've almost purchase every copy of her books. for me personally her books come alive the characters you will remember their names I had caught myself praising God on scriptures that were mentioned in her book in situations that we're told in all of her books for me personally her books will keep you on edge wanting to finish. I work at the hospital 3rd shift so her books help me stay awake and help me pass the night away continue to write from your heart continue to be a blessing and I'm so thankful and glad that I came across these books on this site where I can listen do it with my earpiece may God continue to bless you and continue to work that gift. I just have one suggestion please put put your books in order maybe like volume 1 ,2 because I had to scramble around for the books to keep them in order to capture capture the characters some of the situations in the story.

    "Good listen"

I really enjoy audio books and I hound this one to be a good listen. I was a little disappointed in Curtis' snd Charlottes characters decision making but I guess that is what makes a good book. Overall I enjoyed this one and I'm looking forward to A House Divided.

    "Only 9 Chapters In..."
What would have made The Reverend's Wife better?

A better narrator. New sub-storylines; twists and turns. It's like this: if you are going to write a series as OVER the top and dramatic as the Curtis Black stories, you either have to remain over the top or you should have written something more realistic. For instance, some of the whoring that goes down and Charlotte's evilness toward Curtina (previous book), her inability to accept responsibility for anything in... LIFE; Alicia's similar personality (previous book) and some of the blackmailing and extortion schemes. All are worthy of a daytime soap Emmy. But this book seems to straddle the fence and I'm bored. Very, very bored. I expect series to ebb and flow; some books will be far more exciting than others... but this story seems to be a drawing out of details that don't need to be discussed.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'm committed to making it to the end of this darn series, so I'll read the Prodigal Son.

Would you be willing to try another one of Maria Howell’s performances?

NO! This woman was so dry and boring. I HATE the way she narrated Curtina. The child sounds like a 45 year-old woman. Maria Howell's voice, while beautiful in natural tone, lacked the inflection or intonation that should have been used for such a dramatic set of characters and overall storyline. I thought Paula Jai Parker was terrible (she did the previous book) because she made everyone sound ratchet and country, but after nearly falling asleep on the road listening to Ms. Howell this morning, I actually MISSED Paula's annoying voice. I hate to be harsh but.... PLEASE Ms. Howell, stick to narrating literature of a different genre. I'm annoyed that she narrated the most recent book in the series. I'm almost tempted to just get the Kindle. I'm also trying to figure out why they can't stick to one narrator for the series....

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Nope. It's a bridge to hopefully better books.

    Any additional comments?

I've noticed that Mrs. Roby can be a bit "preachy" about certain things: the professional writing/editing process, black hair salons and hair care, etc. It's slightly annoying because she allows the narration to droll on and on about unnecessary details. I don't really give a flying flip about ceramic hair irons and why they protect the hair because of the thermal heat reduction capabilities (previous book) as this has no intrinsic value when it comes to the storyline.
