Publisher's summary

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

An entertaining ghost story

I had no expectations and was pleasantly surprised to find this story to be fast paced, suspenseful and over all well written. Narration was excellent!

Mind Tricks

A little slow in the beginning but as u got more into it it had me at the edge of my seat. A few parts I think the book could have done without. but wow the mind can really play tricks on you.

Better than Steven King

It's one of the best horror reads yet. Kept you on your toes and not a typical read nor ending either.

fantastic haunt

I love ghost stories. However, most have a terrible twist or something just over the top ridiculous. This one did not! it had me guessing, and spooked, and just very engaged with the story.

One foe King and Koontz fans

This is a combo of traditional ghost story and Stephen King. It is read marvelously well- with an ending that makes sense given the likability of the characters and the way they develop. It has an overriding message about personal sacrifice. It was extremely entertaining though graphically sexual and descriptively violent during some scenes. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes thriller suspense and ghost stories- fans of Dean Koontz and Stephen King will get a kick outta this.

A spooky ride

Enjoyed the story, saw some reviews were upset about political views and I think that’s silly-there was one argument between characters which made sense for their personalities, it was very short lived. Also some unnecessarily explainable sexual content (didn’t add to the ghostly past or person) wasn’t overly terrible but didn’t prove anything in the end. The narrator was very good. Easy to listen to. Possible spoiler alert... the end didn’t make much sense to me. I understand what the main character did for the family and it’s importance but never really felt like closure on the why for the actual haunting. Took a loooong time to figure out who the heck miles was-then I cried and realized why lol overall a decent listen and a spooky story, some tense parts that have you pause.

Very creepy, an interesting read

Great story line, exploring all characters from their points of view about the story. Great author and narrator. I was genuinely freaked out but couldn't stop listening.

I liked it!

What made the experience of listening to The Haunted the most enjoyable?

The narrator was very good. He set the tone and his voice was easy to listen to. The story was good but I think the narrator added to that quite a bit.

What other book might you compare The Haunted to and why?

I would compare this to the movie sphere Only because the ending was flat and simplistic. Great building up to the finale & then 'eh'. It just could have been a better ending .

Which scene was your favorite?

The house warming party was my favorite scene. Bizarre, scary, classic haunt to freak out a large group of people.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

A couple of parts moved me to the point of tears. I got upset when the lead male character Julian talks about Myles and reveals who he really is.

Any additional comments?

I would recommend this audiobook. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Not sure how I feel?

First: the narrator was great. I loved how his tone and pace would change with the events in the story.

The story though: I’m conflicted. It gave me some uneasiness. But every time I expected something exciting to happen, it felt anticlimactic. Nothing was ever really explained. The sexual elements were completely unnecessary as they never tied into anything but were obviously deviations from character norms. Just sex to have sex, I guess. It’s not a bad book, but don’t expect any explanations for anything. Maybe I’m missing some major symbolism here, but...meh.
