Publisher's summary

A foundling, an old book of dark fairy tales, a secret garden, a maze, an aristocratic family, a love denied, a mystery - The Forgotten Garden is a captivating, atmospheric, and a compulsive listen about the past, ghosts, family, and memories from best-selling author Kate Morton.

Thirty-eight year old Cassandra is lost, alone, and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident 10 years ago, feels like she has lost everything known and dear to her.

But an unexpected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns Cassandra's life upside down and ends up challenging everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Inheriting a book of dark and intriguing fairytales written by Eliza Makepeace Rutherford - the Victorian authoress who disappeared mysteriously in the early 20th century - as well as a cliff-top cottage on the other side of the world, Cassandra takes her courage in both hands to follow in the footsteps of Nell, on a quest to find out the truth about their history, their family and their past; little knowing that in the process, she will also discover a new life for herself.

Critic reviews

"This debut page-turner...recounts the crumbling of a prominent British family as seen through the eyes of one of its servants....Morton triumphs with a riveting plot, a touching but tense love story and a haunting ending." ( Publishers Weekly)

Outstanding Listen

A little bit hard to track time, places, and people in the beginning. However once I entered into the story I was taken up into the life and times of all the characters and I enjoyed the book immensely. Narrator helped to keep me engaged. Well done.

Long, interesting and intertwined story!

I enjoyed EVERYTHING about this book! It's rather long, and had many story lines that all weave together very well.

I got sucked in

It took a little while as the timeline hops back and forth and connecting everything didn’t come for me until further I the book, but once it all connected I was hooked and rooting earnestly for Eliza and Nell and Cassandra. The narrator did very well between British and Australian accents - only the American accent seemed awkward. Wonderful overall - I’m sad it’s over!

Something wicked this way comes

Loved the story fairytale like enchantments. There was no revenge (something we are so used to) but it was still a beautiful tale

Excellent Listen!

I listened to this years ago and thought it was good, Recently I ran across it in my audible library and listened again; Loved it!!! There are about 4 stories here that are intertwined. Be sure and get them clear in your mind even it you have to back track. It's mystery, intrigue, love without bad language and sexual content. Women will probably enjoy it more since it's written about 4 generations of women but men might enjoy it too. That's all I'm going to say. I really enjoyed it.

not for listening- READ

Lovely book. Very well written. Too complex to listen to, in my opinion, especially if you're doing something else while you listen. Just drawing and painting and I'd have rewind so frequently..."Wait, now who's that again?" "Who told her that?" "Why do I feel like I have no idea of what's happening right now."
It's really a very good story, and I wish I'd have held the book in my hands and read it instead of listening to it. :/ Maybe that's just me.
I would be quick to recommend it as a good beach read.

My favorite book of all time!

Kate Morton is my all tine favorite author!! This book captures me every time. I cannot put it down. If you’re ready to go on a mystery adventure, then I insist you read the forgotten garden. You’ll have similar feelings as if you were reading Les Miserables, the secret garden, and even titanic. It’s all mixed into one. A thriller. Jealousy, is a cruel hard emotion that captures the very fiber of a soul.
Pick this one up for book club. You won’t regret it!
I love you Kate Morton! You’re an amazing writer.

The initial historical drama drew me in, the fairytales fueled my imagination and the mystery would not let me walk away! The story of 3 generations of determined women, each seeking a link to their past. I can’t wait to ready more Kate Morton works!
