Editorial reviews

Perhaps his best book, The Fog is James Herbert's terrifying thriller where contact with a mysterious fog turns the most innocent of people into homicidal maniacs. Given an extra dose of tension from the sly and gravelly voice of veteran narrator Sean Barrett, the poor folks in little Wiltshire don't stand a chance. The menacing and uncontrollable fog takes over, leaving the town of Wiltshire devastated and on the hunt for more victims. James Herbert is at his prime here and when paired with the dramatic performance from Sean Barrett, The Fog is an audiobook not to be missed.

Publisher's summary

Please note: contains extreme violence and adult themes. Mature listeners only.

The peaceful life of a village in Wiltshire is suddenly shattered by a disaster which strikes without reason or explanation, leaving behind it a trail of misery and horror. A yawning, bottomless crack spreads through the earth, out of which creeps a fog that resembles no other. Whatever it is, it must be controlled; for wherever it goes it leaves behind a trail of disaster as hideous as the tragedy that marked its entry into the world. The fog, quite simple, drives people insane.

Critic reviews

"Herbert was by no means literary, but his work had a raw urgency. His best novels, The Rats and The Fog, had the effect of Mike Tyson in his championship days: no finesse, all crude power. Those books were best sellers because many readers (including me) were too horrified to put them down." (Stephen King)
"There are few things I would like to do less than lie under a cloudy night sky while someone read aloud the more vivid passages of Moon. In the thriller genre, do recommendations come any higher?" (Andrew Postman, The New York Times Book Review)
"Herbert goes out in a blaze of glory." ( Daily Mail)

not bad but a bit dated

This was written in 1975, it was a bit like watching an old movie, somewhat patronizing towards women, all about the men and their misadventures with science.
An event happens and we follow multiple characters as it affects them. I did not come to care about any of them but their stories held my interest.
There was no swearing I remember but some gratuitous sex which did not add to the story.
The reader did a good job.

I lost interest

This book has some creepy and interesting ideas, but it really fell short. The story did not pull me in and I lost interest rather quickly. Every once in a while, something interesting happened, but overall something was missing. I did not care what happened to the characters and could barely get myself to pay attention to the last chapter - no matter how many times I replayed it and tried to tune in. I love horror, but it must grip the reader and not let go! This book was a disappointment for me.

excellent narration

the narrator was excellent for this style of story. The only problem that I had with the story was the main character. He seems to make decisions that are not equal to his main character of a danger mission operative. Only in the end, does he become what he should have been all through it. Too much hesitation in the middle.

Unimaginative barely digestible book dribble

This was a story with a simple plot that would have been much better as a short story than a full novel. The author also went overemphasized sex scenes without much reasons beyond shock value. Despite having a great narrator, the book didn’t have enough grit to be very appealing. There was ample room and opportunities for plot twists that never happened. This a well written unappealing story.

I probably wouldn’t recommend but I didn’t hate reading it.
Probably a little longer than it needed to be.

Crazy Good 🤪

It was a very enjoyable listen, and a nice change of pace after listening to Herbert's Rat trilogy.

Different!

One man's struggle through an environmental crisis turned possible apocalypse is both interesting and very depraved.

Old School Horror

I read this over 30 years ago and wanted to revisit it. It is what it is...a James Herbert horror book. He has some good character details, but his strength is the big picture description of horror. His action sequences are usually over the top violent. They are gory. Like most horror books he tries to shine a light on the darker aspects of life....how twisted humans can be and just what little it takes for us to show our dark sides. I just enjoy the ride of a graphic horror book from time to time.

Sean Barrett is great. He brings the insanity to life. He doesn’t overdue the dialect.
