Publisher's summary

The Eagles’ Brood continues the saga of the Colony known as Camulod, and the tale of the descendants of those brave Romans who forged a new way of life for the Celt and Roman peoples when the Roman legions departed Britain.

Most know the new leader of the Colony as Merlyn; all call him Commander. Cauis Merlyn Britannicus is responsible for their safety, and all look to him for guidance, leadership, justice, and salvation. It is a harsh life but a good community, and Merlyn is dedicated to spreading the influence of Roman culture beyond the Colony’s borders.

Uther Pendragon, the man who will father the legendary Arthur, is the cousin Merlyn has known and loved since they were birthed, four hours apart on the same day, the year the legions left Britain. He is the tireless warrior - the red dragon to Merlyn’s great silver bear - and between the two of them, the Colony knows few enemies.

As different as they can be, they are inseparable: two faces of the same coin. In a world torn apart by warfare and upheaval, each is the other’s certainty and guarantee of the survival of the Colony...until a vicious crime, one that strikes at the roots of Merlyn’s life, drives a wedge between them. A wedge that threatens the fate of a nation....

Awesome!

The whole series is amazing. By far the best of the Arthurian sagas. Kevin Pariseau has been a favorite narrator since the first time I listened to The Winds of War.

A few too many unlikely plot twists

The “hinge” volume in the series, but too many contrived plot twists. Also, the whole “Cassandra” subplot didn’t really make sense.

Slow moving with flashes of excitement

Overall I enjoyed this book, but, dang, about a quarter of it could have been edited out. I set the speed at 120, because the reading moves so slowly. I don't know if I will continue the series, because of the slow pace.

good story

I really enjoyed this series when I first read it. it is still great. I like the retelling of the King Arthur story within the historical context. it is a believable story that keeps my interest.

Great King Arthur and Rome series

When I first read these books a decade ago, I thought they were at the top of their game. They're still great for many reasons, but one thing I missed the first time around is the shear amount of exposition. Much of it is necessary, but most not necessarily so. It would be easy to argue that the primary narrative and story of the books are told in exposition. So if this author's previous works weren't enjoyed by you or you thought other works had too much exposition (like, say Pillars of the Earth) you might be wary. But, what the author does to make up for the amount of exposition is posit an entertainingly plausible story of how King Arthur stepped out of the world left by the fall of Rome. And I still enjoyed that story the second time around.
