Publisher's summary

Ages ago, sorcerers of unmatched power sundered a world into four realms—sky, stone, fire, and water—then vanished. Over time, magicians learned to work spells only in their own realms and forgot the others. Now only the few who have survived the Labyrinth and crossed the Death Gate know of the presence of all four realms—and even they have yet to unravel the mysteries of their severed world. . . .

In Arianus, Realm of Sky, humans, elves, and dwarves battle for control of precious water—traversing a world of airborne islands on currents of elven magic and the backs of mammoth dragons. But soon great magical forces will begin to rend the fabric of this delicate land. An assassin will be hired to kill a royal prince—by the king himself. A dwarf will challenge the beliefs of his people—and lead them in rebellion. And a sinister wizard will enact his plan to rule Arianus—a plan that may be felt far beyond the Realm of Sky and into the Death Gate itself.

Takes me back to my teens.

Read this series when it came out and am loving revisiting it. The narration is great too.

Never underestimate the need for a mixing engineer

I've waited a long time for this book series. The narration is... okay. The narrator has talent and does a great job with voices, while they may not fit the characters they at least make it easy to differentiate who is speaking. The narration between is a little flat, making it hard to pay attention. The biggest gripe is the dynamics. The audio keeps fading from loud to very soft, like the speaker is moving away from the mic, like someone turning away while talking to you. This could have been fixed in mixing with compression! The story itself is great, as others have said.

So happy to have this series!

I have always loved this series since I was young and own all of the hardcovers. This is still a great series with amazing story and characters. Like the others, I will agree others and say that while the narrator was very active and well versed, the accents and voices used just seem off. I would never imagine elves sounding like Irish sailors or Alfred sounding like he was the Alfred from Batman. Just seems the voices don’t match the characters a lot.

Why would you ruin it with accents?!

I have read these books more times than I can count. These books were some of the main stepping stones of my youthful reading journey. To say I love these books are a slight understatement. I was so excited for these to be on Audible but now I won't be buying the rest. There are accents given to different characters and it starts from the very first of the book! It is not even necessary. It doesn't say anything in the books in regards to the races speaking in different accents! It's not even written with different verbiage or slang for the different races. Seriously why is one Geg French and another Irish?! Not impressed with the narrator and the timing for how he reads is just off. Just read the books - THEY ARE AMAZING! Don't waste your credit.

Great!

Nice to have audio versions to experience the series again. I really enjoyed the books when they were first published. The narration was good and the story is still engaging the second time around.

I could nit pick accents, but this is so well done I don't care at all. He r4ally narrates well. On to the next one.

Best series of books, so under rated.

I read the entire Death gate cycle many years ago.I introduced my oldest son to them, and he couldn't put them down. I have since gotten my interpretation of Haplo's rune tattoos. Such good books, I have always wondered why they are basically unheard of in most circles. I highly recommend the entire series to anyone who enjoys reading fantasy novels and doesn't follow the cookie cutter fantasy structure. Wholly original and extremely entertaining read.
