The Best of Everything | [Kimberla Lawson Roby]

The Best of Everything

Alicia was born to the good life, she's entitled to the best, and she'll do anything to get it. Even if it means piling up thousands of dollars in debt. Even if it means denying to everyone - even herself - that her love of shopping has gotten way out of control.

Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Kimberla Lawson Roby has made a name for herself with such engaging novels as Casting the First Stone and Here and Now.

In The Best of Everything, Roby employs her trademark storytelling prowess to relate the tale of a woman whose life is complicated by the fact that her father is none other than Reverend Curtis Black.

Alicia Black Sullivan swore to never repeat her father's mistakes: she would never break any promises, she would never be unfaithful. And most important of all, when she got married, it would be for good. And she really does love Phillip, the assistant pastor of her father's church. She just happens to love money - and the things it can buy - as well.

Alicia was born to the good life, she's entitled to the best, and she'll do anything to get it. Even if it means piling up thousands of dollars in debt. Even if it means denying to everyone - even herself - that her love of shopping has gotten way out of control.

"No better than a bad made for TV movie."

This was such a predictable, silly book. The characters were not developed. The plot was predictable and rather dull.

The reader is horrible, horrible, horrible! A total waste of a credit.

    "Boring"

It took just to long to get into this book. the narrators voice was not right for this book. Its not what I expected and the book itself is not what I thought it would be. I guess I am just looking for another Curtis Black and that is not what this is about.

    "A rewarding read"

I like to shop, but thank goodness I'm not this bad! She was so spoiled, irresponsible and selfish that I didn't feel sorry for her at all. It was good to see the Rev. Curtis Black's spawn get what she deserved. Definitely a good read!

    "Good read!"

I enjoyed this book, but felt that Alisha's character development could have been stronger, and an attempt to connect her childhood experiences with Pastor Curtis Black would have made the book better. I think that the author did a great job with Alisha's husband's character development. I enjoyed the book overall, and I would recommend it to others who enjoy this author.

    Story
    "The Best of Everything"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend. It is one of a long series, but you need not read the others (the Rev. Curtis Black Series) to enjoy this story.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

For what it was, it was a good story. VERY dramatic and soap-opera-ish. You find yourself rolling your eyes and shaking your head throughout the story. But not in a necessarily bad way.

Which character – as performed by Caroline Clay – was your favorite?

Morality to the side. It would be Alicia. I wanted to slap her and ask her, "Girl, do you realize how good you have it? And you're messing it up!"

Who was the most memorable character of The Best of Everything and why?

Once again, Alicia. You just know by the end of this story, she didn't learn her lesson.

    Any additional comments?

No, just that this is an quick, enjoyable read.

"this could have been a great book."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

it was ok. it was missing something.

Would you be willing to try another book from Kimberla Lawson Roby? Why or why not?

i have read several. i think this (and the one i have already bought and have not read yet will be the last. as i said the book falls short.

What about Caroline Clay’s performance did you like?

    she reads well.

Do you think The Best of Everything needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

not a followup but a rewrite.

    Any additional comments?

klr writes in a way that you miss a lot of the story. it is mostly conversation. the story itself could be awesome if the story was really developed. for instance, how each main character in the story was feeling, thinking. more description of the scene--make the story crystal clear--what does each main character react and why. it is as if this was the first or second draft of the book--it is unfinished not in the plot but in the DELIVERING of the story.

if this book was better developed it would be awesome! the story would be much more exciting. this book would make a great movie.

    "Good Story"

Loved how the characters evolved. It didn't end how I'd predicted which was a good thing. Loved the narrators voice.
