Publisher's Summary

Here is LAPD Detective Harry Bosch as we've never seen him before, in three never-before-collected stories.

In "Suicide Run", the apparent suicide of a beautiful young starlet turns out to be much more sinister than it seems. In "Cielo Azul", Bosch is haunted by a long-ago closed case: the murder of a teenage girl who was never identified. As her killer sits on death row, Bosch tries one last time to get the answers he has sought for years. In "One Dollar Jackpot", Bosch works the murder of a professional poker player whose skills have made her more than one enemy.

Whether investigating a cold case or fresh blood, Bosch relentlessly pursues his quarry, always on the lookout for the "tell". In this first collection of Harry Bosch stories, Michael Connelly once again demonstrates that he is the master of fast-paced, brilliantly plotted crime fiction.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

    "Not what you expect"

Im not sure about how I feel about these short stories and I really dont understand why popular authors are made to write them. They always kind of have an "Im not really into this but I have to do it" kind of feel. The stories werent bad but its hard for me to really get locked into a short story like I do regular novels. As far as the performance goes...I like Len Cariou in all of the other MC books, he is usually spot on and as good as the previous reader of Harry Bosch, Dick Hill. However, for some reason he sounds weird in "Suicide Run", almost like he didnt have the art of narrating down pat yet. Had I listened to "Suicide Run" first I would have never gone onto other Harry Bosch books because of how weird Cariou sounded. Overall not bad, for 3.99 its good entertainment....exhausting a whole credit on the other hand for this is not worth it. You pay 14.99 for a gold membership so why would anyone give up a whole credit for a book that costs 3.99??

"Well done. Typical Harry Bosch. I love the guy."

I was tempted to give this 5 stars for the last story. Harry is up against a professional poker player in the interrogation room. I loved the ending of that one. The other stories were good.

    NARRATOR:
Sadly I have problems with the narrator. I used to love him, but he has changed. He has trouble pronouncing certain sounds like K and S. It’s stressful to hear him talk. I wonder if he has ill-fitting false teeth. Other than that he is good with acting and tone of voice.

    Genre: crime mystery

Would you listen to Suicide Run again? Why?

Not really, once I read something, I want to get to something else/new.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Suicide Run?

All three of the stories were nice and neat with real conclusions.

What about Len Cariou???s performance did you like?

Len is perfect for Connelly's work. He delivers another fine performance.

If you could rename Suicide Run, what would you call it?

    Three Short Stories

    Any additional comments?

I am not a fan of Short Stories and only listened because they were written by Michael Connelly. These stories were much better than the

I am a HUGE Bosch fan. Especially when Len Cariou is the narrator. Short, and enjoyable stories that weave in nicely with previous Bosch books. Just purchased the next set of Connelly short Bosch stories as well. [Smile]

"More grist for the Harry Bosch mill!"

More good cases solved by Bosch, but shorter and sweeter in 3 stories. Good writing as usual but Len Cariou is having a tougher time reading in these stories. He once was the best but now is still good but strikes me as fading. Still good Bosch stories, just not as long and involved as the usual stuff.

    "OK for short stories"

I did not enjoy this book as much as his full length books. I also prefer Dick Hill to Len Cariou. The stories had potential, and they were basicially a condensed version of the full length stories. The short stories were not terrible, but again I prefer the full length stories.

    "Ohhhh Maaannn!"

Two and a half Harry Bosch stories -- two are great and reflect his greatness as reflected through the author. Great whodunits. I was a little peeved that the third read/listen was just the first few chapters of another book. I hate it when they do that!

    "Compact, compelling and well-constructed."
If you could sum up Suicide Run in three words, what would they be?

    Succinct, satisfying and solid.

What other book might you compare Suicide Run to and why?

This feels consistent in quality to Connelly's other crime novels. For some reason, Bosch seemed more accessible in this… perhaps because his energies were directed productively, not in locking horns with his coworkers.

Have you listened to any of Len Cariou’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. I find his gravelly voice somewhat distracting - find myself somewhat short of breath hearing the effort forcing the voice beyond his chest. At the same time, I think he gives a good characterization of Bosch.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Actually, as these were short stories, I engaged more on an intellectual level than a visceral one. Connelly tends to build mood over time. Nevertheless, these moved quickly and concluded cleanly. I love how the care with which the author builds his narratives.

    Any additional comments?

I felt this was well worth my time… I recommend it to anyone who wants hour-long entertainment - 3 of them, in fact.

"Good intro to Connelly - if you like Procedurals."

Harry Bosch is a strong lead character, and his stories move pretty fast- especially the short stories.
If you have not tried Connelly, like Detective/Police Procedurals, or if you the like " Harry Bosch" series, this would be recommended.
