It's amazing to read an allegory that speaks so deeply of the love of God in life. What brought tears to my eyes was not the way the author worded her lines, but rather the truth that stood behind them.
If you want to see how much God loves in a parable, this is a beautiful one. If you want to see His grace and forgiveness in a story, listen here.
This book touched my soul. Not because it is a story that has never been told before, but because it is the oldest story ever told in a new way.
It is gospel written in the life of a young woman who needed Him.
Having not being a huge reader myself (mainly not finding the time to with such a digital life these days) I turned my attention to listening to Audio books whilst at work.
Found a review on the internet of this book and was compelled to try it out. As also being a believer of the Lord Jesus this book was even more inviting.
Such a beautiful story of how much God really loves and cares for us all, and how he came to save the sinners/lost.
Recommend this book to all.
Cheers and Blessings
Canadian girl in Kansas, love audible, books on kindle or kindle fire, and old fashioned books! I enjoy fiction most, mostly books with strong female leads. Favourite authors: Diana Gabaldon, Stephen King, Jodi Picoult, Wally Lamb, Pat Conroy, Andre Dubus III, Lisa Genova, many more!
I have had 'Redeeming Love' sitting on my bookshelf for ages. Years, in fact. I had heard from so many friends about how wonderfully beautiful the book was, how I must read it, how my life would change after reading it. I tried several times to delve into the large book's pages but never really got very far. I thought that listening to it might be a good idea.
The story is set in the middle 1800s, and Sara is a happy young child living with her mother. Once in awhile, her biological father would visit but it was very apparent that he was jealous of Sara. He had a wife and children of his own, and he wanted Sara's mother to pay attention to just him and not her child. He cast her out of her 'kept woman' status and ended up dying in an old shack, leaving Sara to child molesters and criminals.
Cut to about 10 years later and Sara, now known as 'Angel,' is a high priced prostitute in a brothel. She is angry and bitter at the world, but her beauty knows no bounds. She meets Michael, who is told by God that he is supposed to marry Sara and bring her home.
Michael does just this, and a tumultuous relationship begins as Michael tries to tear down the walls that Angel has bitterly built over the years of abuse and abandonment. Michael takes his instruction from God and the scriptures, and seemingly will not give up on his new wife. Sara has a very hard time accepting that she is worthy of love, and trusting any man.
The book 'Redeeming Love' is a wonderful story, if you like Christian Fiction. The problem I had with it, was the writing was too simplistic and the story was very repetitive. It was also so very predictable. I think younger readers might find the book more appealing, especially those younger readers who may enjoy Christian Fiction. The narration was very good, but the story itself was much too long. I am not the greatest fan of romance, so it may be that I am just jaded, however; although I am glad I finally listened to 'Redeeming Love,' I wouldn't want to read it again or ready anything else similar to the story.
I'm not a fan of Christian fiction generally. I think most of it is insipid - poorly written, trite, and weak on the spiritual aspects.
There is a reason that Francine Rivers is a beloved author and a bestseller in Christian fiction. She was a successful write of historical romances - the steamy stuff. And then she met Jesus Christ, who transformed her life and her writing. After 3 years away from writing anything, the Lord gave her a vision for her first Christian novel - an adaptation of the book of Hosea, set in 1850s gold rush California with a Godly man who is seeking God's will and the prostitute that God put in his life as his wife.
Rivers does a good job on the adaptation. Her characters are well drawn, fully human, people who are real and flawed. The truth about love, forgiveness, grace and mercy, judgment, and redemption are all present.
My only complaint is that the book seemed long. It seemed that with some editing it could have been more concise, less repetitive. But maybe that's just me.
I listening to Redeeming Love very much. Narrator, Kate Forbes, did a good job.
The story is entertaining/heartbreaking but the pace is a little slow. The author talks slowly and the writing is a bit fluffy, so it takes awhile to move the plot forward. (We listened to it at an accelerated speed and it didn't feel rushed at all) However, once my fiance and I got into the heart of the story, we were hooked. It was a very powerful message that left us both feeling convicted and encouraged. The ending is so perfect that it made every exaggerated pause was well worth it!! We all need to hear this story.
This is not a book I would read over and over again, but not because of how it was written (it's excellently written). Throughout the story Francine Rivers' description of the characters makes them come alive and so I found myself enraged, frustrated, saddened, and anxious to hear what was coming. I didn't want to put the book down, and it's 17 hours long! I found myself listening when I was making dinner or sitting in front of the television with my husband in the evenings.
The situations in the book made me feel intense emotions and I am grateful that Rivers wrote a book with this content. I will definitely recommend it to others, with a warning to be prepared to have their lives changed.
The reader was okay for me. Not the best. She generally had one tone through the whole book, which didn't always work with the storyline.
This book helped me remember that God Loves me regardless of my past. And how to accept love from others even though I might not think I deserve it. Wow! Moving, emotional, confirming and rejoiceful. Well crafted to bring out the true emotion of the relationship between us and the Father. Awesome and again thank you.
This book is so incredible. The writing is good, narration is good, but the story itself is just so powerful. I think it speaks to women of all backgrounds. I've listened to it four times now, and this time will probably not be the last.
The story; what an incredible story!
The closing chapter when Sarah walks to Michael across the field....wow, what a description written by this talented author....you could just see it in your mind!
A voice that matches the character so well!
I love listening to books:)
Loving you is Easy, Misty Eyez
YES very much - this is a tale of Timeless Love - This story takes place in the gold rush era, yet it is easily translates into the lives of the post Millennium reader today. Love is Pure - and Love is True - or at least in the case of Michael Jose. We follow the amazing story of Angel a young girl sold into slavery prostitution and watch/enjoy as her surprising life unfolds.
Angel - for I relate to her the most, but I fell in love with Michael and pray for him to be in my life one day. However, I must say my favorite character is Paul for he accurately portrays 99% of Christians and they way they cannot look at you without judgement. Judgement is the opposite of love.
no but she was brilliant at the different tones and voices for each character.
The End - but I wont spoil it for you.
I really loved this book and Im so glad I listened to it.
"A wonderful story - a def cant put it down book"
Yes - It is a fantastic story which helped me to remember lots of truths about being a Christian as well as wonderful story on its own
The way it intertwined the old testament story of Hosea with this love story.
Although some of the story was predictable - there were various points in the story when it was unclear what was going to happen and I was prepared to stay up pretty late to read on so I could find out how things were going to turn out for the characters.
I enjoy reading this book .
Michael's faith is amazing and his continue effect to pleased god.
"Really moving. Brought me to tears!"
i really loves this book. i struggled in the beginning because I didnt really like the style of the narration but the more i listened to it the more i enjoyed listening to the narration. storywise is very different to all the "christian" books i have read. it was a real "page turner" and put some perspective into real life.
"Moving, heart warming & gripping story."
This is a heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting story of love triumphing over hopelessness. A beautiful modern take on a biblical story.
Very good book, narrated well. Story line struck heart cords and characters makes you analyse yourself.
"A real love story, with extra levels below......"
Gives plenty to think about and ponder after its done.....
Hhmmmmm - what would I have done......
It's well worth a read/listen
The rescue scenes - harrowing yet gentle....
Narrations OK, but a little slow in pace I thought.
Lump in throat several times - makes you think about your own life - and in a good way.
And it's about you too - just read the book of Hosea....
This is a book to listen to, ponder, and apply to yourself - as well as following the characters and plot. The parallels with the book of Hosea in the Bible are there, but not at all overwhelming or intrusive.
"Exciting, inspirational, thrilling"
I would most certainly recommend this audiobook to a friend. The story was gripping, very emotional, well written and well performed.
Well! I had vaguely heard the story of the prophet Hosea but never really thought about in any depth. However this story which was based on the life of the prophet, but based in the American gold rush era, was breathtaking. The story was gripping, I became so absorbed in the characters and I went through all the gamut of emotions possible whilst listening to it. The characters all had distinctive personalities and the way the author wove the religious theme into the storyline was magnetic and revealing in its application of the scripture. I didn't want it to end, even though I was longing to know what happened.
Yes, I believe that this is probably her best performance.
I wanted to know the outcome and could have listen to it in one sitting but I paced myself as I wanted to savour it. In fact, I listened to it twice in a row.
I learnt so much from this book. Thank you Francine Rivers.
