Publisher's summary

An electrifying first novel that shocks by its language, its circumstances, and its brutal honesty, Push recounts a young black street-girl's horrendous and redemptive journey through a Harlem inferno. For Precious Jones, 16 and pregnant with her father's child, miraculous hope appears and the world begins to open up for her when a courageous, determined teacher bullies, cajoles, and inspires her to learn to read, to define her own feelings and set them down in a diary.

This is Me

I can’t believe how much this reminds me of myself. I can make it? We.

Powerful, Tragic, Optimistic

I saw the movie before reading/listening to the book, but I found the book to be “better”. It’s gut wrenching, uncomfortable at times, but the arc is overall beautiful. I wish Audible had the full version available, but even the abridged version is impactful enough to give a the listener a full experience.
I read some complaints regarding the author’s narration being too fast, so I slowed it down to 0.85 speed, which was perfectly fine.

Reader read it better than I could ever have

The story isn’t for the weak. Growing up in the Bronx, things like this were so common among people. This book came out when I was in middle school and I can remember everyone relating to this book-including myself. Hearing the audible made me realize I misunderstood a few things from the first time I read it.

Provocative words

I hated how uncomfortable this story made me feel. I guess that was part of the point to grab your attention. It also saddened me to think that someone lived through this. I don't understand how an adult could do that to a child and another adult just allow this to happen. It's amazing how much strength and determination Precious has and how she fought for a better life. Not sure if I can watch the movie or read it again but it was a good listen.

Reality

This is a wonderful book that I can identify with. This book spells out many of the reasons why there is a social underclass.... Mental illness is primary. A must read.

Trauma and Resilience

This is a story of hope and resilence for anyone that has faced a horrific amount of childhood trauma. It is was unimaginable that a child could go through what Precious experienced and what was even more horrifying was the community around her... family, school, and neighbors did absolutely NOTHING to save her! Sadly, this is the story of so many. I loved that this was a story of a young woman that fought to have a better life than the one she had been given. The strength, determination, and resilence of Precious Jones was absolutely remarkable!
