R. L. Mathewson's ear for witty dialogue and tension-filled scenes is on full display in her audiobook Playing for Keeps. Haley, young and easily pushed over, has finally decided she's had enough and it's high time she takes charge of her life. When she spies her annoying neighbor ruining one of her flowerbeds, she finds her first opportunity to take charge. The only problem is, Jason, the troublesome neighbor, has a look and physique that could melt a popsicle in January. Performed by Eileen Stevens with a sultry energy, Playing for Keeps is a perfect for remedy for those cold, late nights.
Done with being the world's biggest pushover, Haley decides that things are going to change starting with the aggravating neighbor who has too much charm and not enough restraint. What she didn't expect was to be sucked into his world, but Haley has a game plan and she won't let herself forget just what the bad boy next door is capable of.
The last thing Jason expected was for his little shy neighbor to go Rambo on him over some ruined flowers. After he decides to take her under his wing he can't help but that notice that she fits very nicely in his life. Now the only left is to convince her that this is anything but a game.

I'm proud to be a bookaholic...addicted, obsessed, passionate!!! My favorite way to relax & escape reality....
This story was sweet, romantic, and fun! The characters were lovable & I enjoyed the playful interaction between them. The story line was simple, and although it wasn't action-packed, I did not want to put this book down. Jason Bradford loves women, just doesn't love them enough to start a relationship with him. After five years of getting the cold shoulder from his neighbor, he is delightfully surprised to find out she is a baseball fan, cooks sinfully delicious goodies, and a total blast to hang with. As a unique friendship develops, both Jason and Haley find themselves dating each other without actually dating one another, only time will tell if it will develop into something more. Jason and Haley are adorable, sweet and kept me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. Jason is absolutely delicious and his obsession for baked goods was freaken hilarious. Haley is your typical shy bookworm but she's got a lot of sass and fire underneath it all and it was really great to see her come out her own shell. The off the charts chemistry between these two was simply irresistible and steamy as hell. The characters are both wacky, and their behavior is off the charts unbelievable. This is a real feel good, pick me up type of book, that'll have you laughing in no time. Loved it!
I was born with a reading list, so long , I will never finish.

Excellent voices brings you into story it moves so fast I laughed so much
Jason well rounded
Read or listen to this book I recommended highly very well written and funny real life situations
Absolutely!! A narrator can make or break a story for me! She made an already great book into an even better story!! This series is one of my absolute favorites! The characters and side characters are great! I have actually been crying laughing at some of the scenes! Just a great book!! Totally with a purchase or a credit!
reviewed wrong book for one more day
I absolutely loved the banter between the two main characters. They were very entertaining
favourite scene is when Haley has Jason in handcuffs at the end.
The first half of the book definitely captured my attention. It was engaging and I looked forward to seeing the characters develop. I grew tired of the "grasshopper" comments, as I thought it sounded weird. And then the story just went downhill pretty fast and couldn't keep my attention.
I finished the book, so I can't say that I wouldn't recommend it. It was a sweet, innocent, romance book.
Performance was really good.
No. There isn't enough of a deep story line.

I thought Playing for Keeps would be a fun read, but soon found the characters too immature to be engrossing. When 2 adults who teach high school can live next door and work in the same school & not be able to have 1 mature conversation about their differences in 5 years, I started to get bored. Then instantly they are best friends and sleeping together (without sex) and each is too insecure to believe he/she is lovable. Felt like a bad teen romance...
I am a sucker for romance and love a good comedy, so when I can get the combination of the two...I'm sold! Found this from browsing goodreads and decided to try it. It does not disappoint...go ahead and try it if you like a cute modern romantic comedy sort of thing.
I really enjoyed this story. The narrator did an excellent job in bringing the story to life. I will now listen to the second book in the series.
I love books and love to get lost in the fantasy. I'm always looking for a new good story to bury myself in. :)
This is a great book. I love Haley and Jason and their story was fun and entertaining while also being a good romance with deep emotions. I've read this book before (years ago) and it's just as good the second time around.
Haley was born to rich parents who weren't involved in raising her at all. It was all nannies and boarding schools until her Grandmother moved closer so she could live with her and have a relatively good childhood. Haley decided to become a teacher and this didn't meet with the approval of her family and so they use it as an excuse to look down on her. TBH, her family is absolutely horrible and she should just disown them (well, all except her Grandmother who's very cool and loves her). Haley is happy with her job and her house (which she bought on her own) but 5 years ago a new neighbor moved in and he's made her home life a struggle. It doesn't help that he's also a teacher at the same school as her and so she has to try to deal with him/avoid him at work as well.
Jason is what you'd call a lovable jerk. He's nice in general but he just doesn't really care and tends to do lots of things that piss people off. He's never been serious about a woman and just tends to screw around. Jason tries to make it clear to the women that he's not in to anything serious but that doesn't mean that drunk EXes (and calling them EXes is way overstating their meaning to him) don't still show up to bitch him out at times (and sometimes end up on his neighbor's doorsteps instead). Jason has parties at his house and doesn't look after his house which pisses all his neighbors off even more.
The story begins with Haley in her house and she sees Jason pulling up her tulips (the bulbs of which were given to her by her Grandmother and are special to her) out of her flowerbed. Haley's not much for confrontations and has tried to ignore all the crap Jason puts her through but this is the last straw. Haley goes outside and starts spraying Jason with the hose to get him to stop. An argument ensues and even some wrestling around as they fight about the tulips until the yellow jackets show up. It ends up Jason was pulling up the tulips to try to get to the underground nest when they disturb it, they have to flee inside Haley's house before they're stung to death by a swarm of bees. They end up locked up together all day but they quickly realize that when they're not avoiding each other because of their difficulties that they have tons in common (including being huge Yankee's fans). Jason is impressed by Haley and he decides to be her friend, taking her under his wing and teach her how to stand up for herself and live life (calling her his little grasshopper). He invites her to one of his parties and she finds that they're not as bad as she thought and actually enjoyed herself. It soon becomes apparent that Jason is a food hog and is constantly hungry (thankfully he has a very high metabolism) and when it turns up that Haley is an awesome cook and she starts bringing Jason baked goodies he's a goner. They have a good friendship and even pull pranks on each other and laugh and have fun with each other. They both like their friendship and are happy with their situation but things shift when they go out of town for a Yankee's game. Through and issue with a lack of rooms, Jason and his friend need to stay in Haley's room and since there's limited bed space, Jason and Haley sleep together. All they do is sleep but when they get back home, they both find that they can't fall asleep alone. After a both of them struggle with sleep they realize the issue is they need each other to sleep and so they start sleeping together ever night (but no sex or anything take place between them).
Haley and Jason stay friends for a bit while they're sleeping together but eventually things shift for both of them. Jason knows he doesn't deserve Haley and I think it keeps him from realizing his feeling for her in the beginning. With their friendship, Jason has started being a better guy and realizing just what a jerk he used to be. Now he loves being with Haley but doesn't acknowledge where things might go until one of his friends brings up the issue. Haley has started liking Jason more and more and sleeping with him has stimulated other desires. Eventually Haley ties kissing Jason and things spike between them and it turns in to something more. Haley and Jason's relationship gets more serious and she's worried the next morning that he'll regret it but Jason surprises her (and me as the reader) by admitting that he knows he's not good at relationships and he'll probably mess things up in the future but he wants to give things with her a real try. I thought it was really sweet and loved how Jason was willing to admit his weakness and just put it out there that he'd do his best not to mess things up. Haley and Jason are actually great together but others do cause some problems. Her family is horrible at best and treated Jason like you would a cockroach in the kitchen so needless to say they only caused hassles. Jason's family is a great group but when Jason took Haley to a family picnic without telling them he had a girlfriend first, none of his family believed him and tried to set Haley up with his single male family members. Regardless of family issues, Haley and Jason do pretty well until some of Haley's supposed friends decide to cause some trouble and tell Jason things to make him doubt her. In his hurt and need to unsure she loved him, Jason made a mistake that cause Haley to be very hurt. Unfortunately, Haley wasn't very willing to forgive and it ends up causing some drama and more hurt before things finally get fixed. Thankfully, Jason and Haley work their issues out and wind up together and starting their HEA together.
This was a great story. I loved both Haley and Jason and got sucked in to their story from the beginning. The story and characters are fun and entertaining and kept things interesting throughout the story. One of the things I love about Mathewson is her ability to infuse fun in the story while still having all the emotions and drama of great romance. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series (which I'm starting as soon as I finish this review). I'd recommend this book. 2 thumbs up! :D
