Nowhere to Run: A Joe Pickett Novel

Joe Pickett's in his last week as the temporary game warden in the town of Baggs, Wyoming, but there have been strange things going on in the mountains, and his conscience won't let him leave without checking them out: reports of camps looted, tents slashed, elk butchered. And then there's the runner who simply vanished one day. Joe doesn't mind admitting that the farther he rides, the more he wishes he could just turn around and go home.

Publisher's Summary

Joe Pickett's in his last week as the temporary game warden in the town of Baggs, Wyoming, but there have been strange things going on in the mountains, and his conscience won't let him leave without checking them out: reports of camps looted, tents slashed, elk butchered. And then there's the runner who simply vanished one day.

Joe doesn't mind admitting that the farther he rides, the more he wishes he could just turn around and go home. And he is right to be concerned. Because what awaits him is like nothing he's ever dealt with, like something out of an old story, except this is all too real and too deadly. When he'd first saddled up, he'd thought of this as his last patrol. What he hadn't known was just how accurate that thought might turn out to be.

He's game: solve another mystery with Joe Pickett.

What the Critics Say

"Box inexorably builds Joe's harrowing personal quest into a complex meditation on human greed and government corruption. A lone black wolf, possibly Box's symbol for the wilderness within and without the human soul, tracks Joe throughout this terrible, beautiful tale of courage and compassion and culpability." (Publishers Weekly)

"Nowhere to Run, the tenth in the series, ranks with his best books....Readers should take note of their surroundings before opening this book: once they start reading, they won’t know what hit them." (Booklist)

If you are an hunter and outdoors person this book is for you. My wife and I have listened to all the Joe Picket books we can find. All have made me want more. Chandler helps to make these books great.

    "The Best Yet"

As a Wyoming born and raised and now a 70+ yr old retired Law Enforcement guy I have enjoyed all of Joe Pickett's adventures. This one is the Best. I don't know how C.J. keeps coming up with great stories.

"Not my favorite Joe Pickett Novel"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Excellent narration and suspense, but frustrating.

What was most disappointing about C. J. Box’s story?

I really couldn't help feeling that the main character is the Barney Fife of game wardens in this novel. Really! I wouldn't have been surprised to see the Governor give Joe only one bullet.

"Joe Picket makes some hard choices."

Wow, this was a gripping Joe Picket story. His struggles are epic, his decisions tough, the consequences dire. How will he continue? Thank you C.J. Box!

"I love Joe Pickett Novels - except this one"
Would you try another book from C. J. Box and/or David Chandler?

Yes. I've read and listened to all previous novels in the series and given them 5 stars. I didn't like this one at all. This one was difficult for me. I felt like I was listening to a version of Deliverance, and was particularly bothered by the gruesome depiction of the horses' suffering.

David Chandler's narration was, as always, superb.

What do you think your next listen will be?

ll probably read the rest of the books in the series in the hope that they will be more enjoyable. I've loved all of the previous books in the series.

What does David Chandler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Chandler's narration made listening to this disappointing story doable for me.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and in many cases revulsion.

I have always loved to read. As a child my mom actually grounded me from books if I was in trouble. Noone can do that now. Yay!

    "a darker, sadder, grittier Pickett"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes. While I have found enjoyment in all of Joe's stories this one was a bit different. It is darker and gorier. I liked the plot line in this volume, but some of the elements of the crime felt far-fetched. I know it is a mystery and is supposed to come from some strange place that most of us cannot imagine, but I like stories best when the characters and stories are real and believable. So, my biggest complaint with this book is its lack of believability.

What does David Chandler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I continue to love David Chandler's ability to translate Joe and Nate from the written word to an engrossing audio-movie. He is superb.

    "One of the best"

C.J. Box is making a huge dent in my audible budget these days. I have found working through his Joe Pickett series immensely enjoyable and this has been one of my favorites. What I particularly enjoy is how the author handles the endings, rarely going to the obvious and (frustratingly) never quiet allows Joe to get the credit or respect he deserves. The balance between the hard wilderness men and the do good greenies is perfect, showing the deep flaws in both extreme positions. David Chandler is stellar, the package totally addictive.

    "A right-wing, wild-West Charles Dickens"

Wonderful writer, great series, but this is the first in Box's game warden sagas in which the writer's right-wing politics popped me out his story. His agenda is always there, but the delivery is so good it doesn't matter to me, and I'm comfortably to the left of most of the Democratic Party. That missing runner? She surfaces to say she's been to Europe and hated to see the universal health care they practice, as it represents an intolerable loss of personal freedom. Ah yes, if you've been denied health insurance or can't afford it, free to get cancer and lose your house, your savings, your ability to feed your children. Box so obviously sympathizes with this point of view. Let's be free to have our lives run by insurance companies. The rich get richer and the middle-class disappears! Drink the Tea Party Kool-Aid! U.S.A.!!!!!

    "A disappointment"

I waited for this book only to find it disappointing compared to his others. Not bad if you haven't read the rest of the series but I was not happy. I will continue to Read C.J. Box's books, he is excellent, this one just didn't get the job done for me. David Chandler was great as always.
