Night Music

The Spanish House is a mixture of designs, Georgian, Gothic and Moorish, as if whoever started it had simply got bored. It has long been known as an architectural folly to locals, and is now nearly derelict to boot. When its reclusive owner dies intestate, the Spanish House is left to his city-dwelling niece. For Isabel, recently widowed, the house is a potential lifeline - the only hope she has of providing for her two children without having to sell her most treasured possession.

But for neighbour Matt McCarthy, the house is revenge - on the family who ruined his father. For his wife it's the key to the perfect family life, while a struggling property developer sees in it a whole new future. As desires clash and intertwine, lives and loves are demolished - and the Spanish House becomes a true folly indeed...

    "I enjoyed this story"

Night Music hit all the right notes (ha ha). :-) I really enjoyed the story and the narrator was very good. The story is good from the beginning to the end with no boring parts. I'm also glad the author knew when to end the story and did not extend it longer than necessary.

    "Jojo Moyes is my favorite."
    Any additional comments?

Jojo Moyes is my favorite author now. I read one of her books and loved it so I tried another. most of the time I am disappointed in the next book I read by the same author, this time I was pleasantly surprised. So I dared to do it a third time and then a fourth. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of them and give them 4 stars each, something I rarely do.

"A good book but not a great book"
What did you love best about Night Music?

Picturing the scene where the house was set - the village and characters.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was ok I think. I listened to this book about 4 weeks ago and I cannot actually remember the ending...so I guess it wasn't very memorable!

Would you listen to another book narrated by Clare Corbett?

    Yes.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really, it was a bit predictable. I liked the Byron character, so I think his relationship with the young boy would be the most compelling relationship of the story - therefore a bit moving I guess.

    Any additional comments?

An easy listen...not overly memorable or anything...but 'nice'.

    "Not my cup of tea"
What did you like best about Night Music? What did you like least?

Well I'm sorry to say this was not to my liking.

What was most disappointing about Jojo Moyes’s story?

Too slow at the beginning. I had to listen some of the chapters over just so I could follow it.

What aspect of Clare Corbett’s performance would you have changed?

The narrator. I had a difficult time understanding her.

Do you think Night Music needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. This story was all over the map.

    Any additional comments?

I'll will be more careful to pick my next book. Sorry I wasted my credits.

AVID reader; very critical. My reviews don't repeat the book's description, but are why I enjoyed the book and why I think you will.

"Hard to Believe By Author of Me Before You"

Me Before You is one of my all time favs. Which is why I decided to try this book. There is no comparison in the depth of the story, writing and characters between the two books. This book is so-so at best.

    "Needed an Editor"

We enjoyed much about this author, and she had some surprising twists, but it is still a formula romance novel. This is why she needed a better editor -- without some of the exhausting and predictable drawn-out romance novel moves, it would be a better book. About 2 hours, gone, and that would make it better.

Also, at the end we were going "What? Really you are going to do that mousy stuff with them? Puhleeze!" So very disappointed wishy-washy ending which was not like either character.

    "Good book - perhaps a bit soap-operaish"
Who was your favorite character and why?

I could relate to many of the characters, especially the children. Isabelle and Byron are probably the most relatable of the adults. Clare Corbett did a fantastic performance of this novel.

Which character – as performed by Clare Corbett – was your favorite?

She did a fantastic portrayal of almost all the characters - the responsible teenager, faithless husband, damaged handiman... even the singing of a little boy. She did a fantastic job, and I can't wait to hear her performance in Moyes' "The Girl you Left Behind."

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this look at country English life. Perhaps a bit more soap-operaish than I normally listen to - all characters seemed to have had or be having affairs - but the house itself symbolizing the rebuilding or deconstruction of families and marriages was a great plot device. I am glad I bought this book on sale - it's a nice light summer read, much lighter than Moyes' "The Ship of Brides" or "Me Before You" - and perhaps as such it was not quite as strong. Clare Corbett's nraration carries this one through.

    "Night Music"

This is my 4th Jojo Moyes audible book and each one is so different with one thing in common, you have a problem in putting them down. I think this may be my favourite but then again I think that about each book. and I'm about to start my 5th. This is one talented author.

I couldn't wait to get back into the car to hear the next segment of this book. I would definitely recommend it. The characters are described very well so well you can almost picture each person and each scene. The narrator was by good too. Definitely worth downloading.

    "Hungry for more!!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Jojo Moyes' descriptive writing is amazing. I loved the description of being out in the woods, I felt like I was there.

What did you like best about this story?

    The descriptive writing.
Jojo Moyes left me hanging for more, I wanted her to impart Boyd's knowledge of foraging so I could do it for myself.

Which character – as performed by Clare Corbett – was your favourite?

Kitty was performed well. I didn't like her performances of the two supposed men in their 30's, they struck me as being older and took some of the passion of this story away for me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes definitely.

    Any additional comments?

A brilliant book, left me wanting to immerse myself in music and nature.

I read this on immediatly after Me Before You, which I had utterley devoured - a difficult bok to follow. I thought Night Music was ok and I did get into to it in the end and quite enjoyed it, but Me Before You will stay with me for a very long time, whereas this one is simply a novel to read and forget. Sorry Jojo

"Jojo does it again, excellent story"
If you could sum up Night Music in three words, what would they be?

    Compelling, infuriating, superb

What other book might you compare Night Music to, and why?

    None....Jojo Moyes is an original.

What about Clare Corbett’s performance did you like?

I thoroughly enjoyed it. She interprets the characters so well and the voices she attributes to each one is exactly as you would expect.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several times when Isabel came through as a totally selfish, useless Mother. I absolutely felt for her teenage daughter and wanted to slap Isabel for being so self-centred...but she came good in the end!

    Any additional comments?

Every story I read/listen to of Jojo Moyes is totally different. I thoroughly enjoy all of her books and am looking forward to new ones being added to Audible.

Would you listen to Night Music again? Why?

No, i enjoyed it but I've enjoyed other of her books which were more interesting, Me before you for example.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Can't remember the chapter but the part where the children start to settle in stands out.

What does Clare Corbett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Can't say really, a good reading voice maybe

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No not really, obvioulsly I should have written this review immediately after finishing it instead of two weeks later!

    Any additional comments?

Nice easy story, didn't take it to bed though so not that gripping !!
