Audie Award Nominee, Paranormal, 2013

Teenage delinquent Angel Crawford lives with her redneck father in the swamps of southern Louisiana. She's a high school dropout, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and has a police record a mile long. But when she's made into a zombie after a car crash, her addictions disappear, except for her all-consuming need to stay "alive".

Critic reviews

"Allison McLemore's delicate voice and Southern accent give Angel's first-person narration a humorous kick. McLemore excels at bringing Angel's self-deprecating and sarcastic comments to life. Her brisk pacing suits Angel's personality and draws listeners in from the first chapter, keeping them glued to their earphones as she plays up the book's 'gross factor' with drawling descriptions of gooey brains and crunchy skull cavities. She's also good at giving unique voices and mannerisms to secondary characters." ( AudioFile)

excellent until I got to the end

I loved this book. It was a kind of different paranormal story, I never even thought about the book as "paranormal" (even though it's obvious that zombies are not normal), for me it was more like a diary of someone going through the change and adaptation of becoming one.
I really liked the story and the accent of the narrator was on point 100% making the story even better.
I loved the sarcastic and comedic side of the book. the main character was really down to earth and that made it even better. (I am sick of weak, complaining, stupid main characters)
the thing I didn't like (that's the 4 star review) was the end of the book... it was really fast forward, and lame. It even classifies as a cliffhanger for me because I wanted to know what happened about a certain character and it didn't made sense the way it all ended. It went really exaggerated on the extraordinary at the end and I didn't like that.

Good southern accent without being overdone

I loved this story when I read it. The narration is the cherry on top.

Reminds me of the tv show iZombie.

It's a cute story and I liked the character development. The reader did a good job too.

No spoilers

Well first off hels bell's i was not expecting this book to be as good as it was. I read a lot and was bored with all the other genres out there and dove in. This book gave such a different view of a zombie , functioning one's that grew and could think. I felt MS Rowland is building a good world with some fun characters. MS McLemore brought the characters alive and told the story very well. Will be getting more of this series. Don't let the cover and zombies steer you away from this book. This was a book book.

Love it!

I wasn't sure about this one, but have it a try and was soon hooked, and have since listened to the entire series.

Fun, funny, and oddly touching at times. Kick-ass protagonist. And zombies. Loads of zombies.

Great concept, fun different story

I not only thoroughly enjoyed this first book but ive been plowing through the rest of the series. I really enjoy zombie themed story lines but had never experienced a story from this sort of perspective. All my stories before were apocalyptic settings and zombies are evil. After burning out on those stories this series has been a hugely refreshing change with wit, sarcasm, zombie action, and a hugely surpising character development. Angel, the main character is very human and struggling and its refreshing to see her grow through it. The rest of the series is still different enough to keep you entertained and guessing instead of just rehashing the first book. Do recommend.

Entertaining!

What did you love best about My Life as a White Trash Zombie?

The characters are very interesting and quite funny. It is a great new take on the Zombie scene. Beware if you are sensitive to profanity because Angel swears like a sailor, however, I felt it did not detract from the story at all and actually added to it.

What does Allison McLemore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator is actually very good and her accent lends a realistic voice to the characters in the story.
