Publisher's summary

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Garden Spells comes a beautiful, haunting story of old loves and new, and the power of the connections that bind us forever…

The first time Eby Pim saw Lost Lake, it was on a picture postcard. Just an old photo and a few words on a small square of heavy stock, but when she saw it, she knew she was seeing her future.

That was half a lifetime ago. Now Lost Lake is about to slip into Eby’s past. Her husband, George, is long passed. Most of her demanding extended family are gone. All that’s left is a once-charming collection of lakeside cabins succumbing to the southern Georgia heat and damp, and an assortment of faithful misfits drawn back to Lost Lake year after year by their own unspoken dreams and desires.

It’s a lot, but it’s not enough to keep Eby from calling this her final summer at the lake, and relinquishing Lost Lake to a developer with cash in hand. Until one last chance at family knocks on her door.

Lost Lake is where Kate Pheris spent her last best summer at the age of twelve, before she learned of loneliness and heartbreak and loss. Now she’s all too familiar with those things, but she knows about hope, too, thanks to her resilient daughter, Devin, and her own willingness to start moving forward. Perhaps at Lost Lake her little girl can cling to her own childhood for just a little longer...and maybe Kate herself can rediscover something that slipped through her fingers so long ago.

One after another, people find their way to Lost Lake, looking for something that they weren’t sure they needed in the first place: love, closure, a second chance, peace, a mystery solved, a heart mended. Can they find what they need before it’s too late?

At once atmospheric and enchanting, Lost Lake shows Sarah Addison Allen at her finest, illuminating the secret longings and the everyday magic that wait to be discovered in the unlikeliest of places.

I Wish I Could Visit Lost Lake

At first I wasn't sure about the narration choice, but as the book went on I realized that she did in fact do the book justice. There are three generations of people to cover and Janet Metzger did a fine job.
Kate has been sleep walking through life for the last year after her husband died. Her mother-in-law Cricket has taken over her life and is moving Kate and Devin in with her. For her own political reasons, of course. Cricket is not a lovable character.
Devin discovers a post card that Kate's great-aunt sent Kate when she was 12, a post card that Kate never saw. They decide to take a chance and go visit.
The book has some wonderful quotes that Sarah Addison Allen is known for. There is a little bit of magic, but less than some of her other books. I would have enjoyed reading more about Kate and Wes' beginning romance.
The cast of characters are delightful and their back-stories that are woven into the book are nicely done.

Predictable

Just like a TV drama that wraps up all the loose ends at the end, this book would make a good Lifetime Channel movie.

Lost Lake Review

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I recommend every Sarah Addison Allen books to everyone because shes my favorite author.

Any additional comments?

So happy Sarah Addison Allen is back writing again. Her work is amazing. Allen has a gift for writing these novels and sprinkling just a bit of magic on top. I loved the setting of this book being a southern girl myself. I also loved the little girl in this book, Devon just had such a greatness about her that really just made this book for me.

Not something I would normally listen to, but...

My sister-in-law and I traded audio books and this was the one she picked out for me. It's not something I would normally pick out for myself because I would consider it a "chick-flick" type of book, I guess. But I was pleasantly surprised by the story. The flashbacks, and how they tied together everything in the present, were my favorite parts of the story. It was heartwarming, tragic but not TOO tragic, and it had a bit of magic sprinkled in. It was a nice little reprieve from the thrillers and fantasy novels I usually listen to. The narrator was also very enjoyable. I will be putting the author and the narrator on my list of future listens.

Excellent comfort read!

Sarah Addison Allen has become one of my go-to authors when I want to read or listen to something that is going to make me feel good. Her books never stress me out or make me mad at the characters or the world.

I've heard her books described as "magical realism", and I'm surprised how much I enjoy that, given how much of a skeptic and pessimist I am in real life. But if you are willing to sit back and just enjoy the story, you'll come away feeling happier for it.

Beautiful

I love SAA. I love all of her books. If you like a story about small southern towns with a touch of magic, you'll like this book. The grief is almost tangible but it's so beautifully written that you feel like your tears are part of the story.
