Publisher's summary

The first installment in a thrilling series in which a global catastrophe puts a family’s survival at risk—and both reveals the darkness in human hearts and lights the way to restoration.

Birmingham, Alabama, has lost all power. Its streets are jammed with cars that won’t start, and its airport is engulfed in flames from burning planes. All communications—cell phones, computers, even radios—are silent. Every home and business is dark. Is it a natural disaster, a terrorist attack, or something far worse?

In the face of a crisis that sweeps an entire high-tech planet back to a time before electricity, the Branning family faces a choice. Will they hoard their possessions in order to survive—or trust God to provide as they share their resources with those around them? Yesterday’s world is gone. Family and community are all that remain. And the outage is revealing the worst in some.

Desperation can be dangerous—especially when a killer lives among them.

What a terrifying thought!

As I listened to this story, I saw a lot of myself in there, and wonder how I would react. It was so carefully crafted to keep me on my toes, and so realistic.as I say in all your reviews, I pray that many, many thousands of people will come into His Kingdom thru your books, as they see how useless life is without Jesus. The narrator spoke beautifully, although the recorded volume was low so I had to listen through earplugs or speakers. But thank you for the book, absolutely brilliant!

Good listen

I very much enjoyed this book. It took a few unexpected turns, which helps to keep your interest. Gives me alot to think about. Could I survive in those conditions? Could you? Look forward to the next book.

audio quality

it is a great book with a good story. however this book (and I've listened to many audible books) seemed top have a bit poorer audio quality, and even when i turned the volume up I heard more background noise than the audio.

Not to be missed

Finally a religious survivalist combo that works. Developed well and no contrived situations. Enjoyed it from start to finish.

Not as good as I had hoped.

This book got me to think but it was not as good as I had hoped. It did not flow well.

Really a good listen with a surprising storyline

I love dystopian fiction and I also find end of the world preparedness interesting, but this story is quite different. The main character is a totally normal guy who got caught up in a supposedly world-wide power related event. He wasn't a more common main character "Joe Tank, Delta Force Commander" fresh out of the military. Main characters like that offer a good perspective until about the dozenth different book. Too predictable, in my opinion. Martin wasn't even in the military, and the perspective of his character is extremely unique versus most EOTW stories, His is story is very well told. Situations he encounters do not involve a solution in the form of the perfect tool coming from his bottomless preppers bag. It is much more common, realistic. Refreshing, to say the least.
In a very different story/situation, this book and story has the uniqueness something on par with other different dystopian perspectives in main characters found in books more similar to One Second after or Odd Billy Todd, or even less prepared, from that perspective. Very good and can't believe I hadn't found this earlier!

My only "hmm" was the fact that my recording options started at Chapter 2 until Chapter 12, then Chapter 1 appeared. Odd.

Intense

Haven’t “read” Terri Blackstock in a while, but this book was intense. It kept me guessing. And I guess it was intense, because something like this is possible. Made me think, what would I do? Would I trust God to protect us or complain because I didn’t have the comforts of life we are all so use too. Looking forward to the next book.

Thought provoking storyline/Horrible narration

The plot line was definitely thought-provoking and easily kept my attention through the entire novel. However, the narration was so bad it did a disservice to the content. the narrator sometimes sounded like he was from Boston, sometimes like a hillbilly, and sometimes like a true southerner.

Worth listening to and reflecting!!

This story kept me engaged all the way through to the end. Already have book 2 in my library to start listening to after this review. I almost didn’t try this one after reading the reviews of the narration - I am glad that I have it a try. There were some whining conversations and he did a decent job trying to sound like young kids. I understood what the reviews were talking about, BUT that should not have resulted in such negativity on his performance. Give this book a try, you will be hooked.
