Following the death of her bullying husband, Etta Bancroft's selfish children move her to a village in the Cotswolds. One night, she discovers a filly, left to die in the snow. With help, Etta rescues the horse, and she and her friends form a syndicate to pay for her upkeep. As the horse recovers, she begins to show racing pedigree, so the syndicate enters her into a maiden hurdle - and are shocked at the result.

A book for animal lovers.
Some terribly over the top bedroom scenes.
Dora Belvedon is performed as a great combination of jolly hockey sticks enthusiasm and gutter journalist.
The book goes for 27 hours!
Jilly Cooper is low-brow fiction, but she has a huge heart. Nothing is more important to her than human kindness.
Yes. A great, fun story.
Maybe condense it a little. It was long.
The performance was great.
Yes plenty of laughs.
Hot romance/Sci Fi we're so lucky to have Audible to feed our book addictions. I love walking my precious dog Sydney & listening to my books
As always with Jilly Cooper storyies it was fun to read and kept me interested right till the end. Very enjoyable.
After years of refusing to read Jilly Cooper after having friends reccomend it to me, I was suprised at how much I enjoyed this. Well narrated, and what a bunch of characters. But I particularly liked how the animals were bought to life in this novel.
This was quite a long audio book but it was never dull. There were lots of characters some sweat, some sexy, some obnoxious. Gerri Halligan did a good job with the voices making it a very easy book to listen to.
"If you enjoyed "Riders" buy this !"
Having greatly enjoyed the unabridged version of one of my old favourites Jilly Cooper's 'Riders' I was delighted to see her latest novel available by the same excellent narrator just before my holiday. It didn't disappoint - some great new characters and plenty of old ones and a brilliant story line - an ideal holiday companion. If you enjoyed 'Riders' I would highly recommend you buy this. Now we just need the rest of the unabridged Jilly back catalogue to come to Audible - 'Rivals' for starters please !
This was an absolutely brilliant book - and although it was very long it kept me riveted as I needed to find out what happened to each of the characters who became very real during the storytelling. Gerri Halligan is an excellent narrator who made each of the characters come alive - am looking forward to listening to more narrations by her.
As usual Jilly Cooper knows how to thrill and excite the reader/listener
"Do not buy this"
I believe i have read every Jilly Cooper novel. I have been disappointed over the years as they deteriorated, but there was still an element of fun in them. This one has nothing. Absolutely nothing. The characters are more unbelievable than ever, they have no charm, and there is no delight to be had in meeting them. There is not one redeeming feature in this book. I'm not sure that i even managed to get to the end, as i fell asleep for a while, it became so monotonous and boring. There seemed to be nothing but ill will throughout the book. If i can find a way to wipe it out of my Audible library, i will do so, as it is an embarrassment to keep seeing it there. Please do not waste your money on this book when there are so many others to choose from.
I have laughed and cried during this wonderful book. Great narration. Will be difficult to follow.
"An amusing read!"
jump is a fun book to read and had me laughing throughout. Admittedly I don't think it is as good as her earlier works such as Riders and Polo, I did still enjoy it. At times I wanted to cringe at Jilly for trying to be current, her depiction of a Muslim linked with terrorism made for uncomfortable reading. However, overall it is a fun book and has made me want to revisit her earlier books.
"Not Jilly's best"
An easy listen although you may find yourself shouting at some of the characters, not a JC classic.
The Aftermath by Rhidian Brook
I don't think it is as good as her performance in Riders but as that is a far superior story it may be unfair to compare the two. Some of her voices from Riders are the same as characters in this book so it can be confusing, it is hard not to imagine Helen Campbell Black on times.
The characters are horrific with few redeeming features. Many of the characters are just renamed rewrites of old characters. I don't think Billy Lloyd Fox got the send off that he deserved. All the children characters are insufferable and will make your blood boil as will the adults attitude/ behaviour towards them and the teen characters.I found the character having a sexual relationship and the rape of that school aged teen horrific, as with "Wicked" those pages are better off skipped. The attitude of the characters who knew about this deed was outrageously flippant. The main character is Daisy France Lynch but in a new form, sadly she does not have any of Daisy's likeable characteristics. She is wetter than a fishes wet bits and her attitude to the filly is ridiculous. She is treated badly by her children it is true but it is hard to feel sorry for her considering it was her dire mothering capabilities that produced such an odious pair. The horse and the human character relationships are totally unrealistic, it's basically a badly written teenage horse novel for adults. I wouldn't read it / listen to it again. The only good thing to say about it, is that it's better than Wicked.
"A Rampaging Romp with a sensitive touch"
Most enjoyable with a complex plot and unlikely characters. A great read (listen) and unputdpwnable
"Very impressive Jilly Cooper!"
Excellent. Fantastic story teller!! Helped me to relax and get away from an unhappy time.
"Hard going but likeable characters (mostly)"
The worst one
Yes, it was good narration which helped me keep going with the book.
I did get very angry with Ettas children to the point it almost stopped me listening because I didn't want to hear about them. Thankfully they play only a small part in the plot.
It is a long book.
Ordinarily I become obsessed with books, take the long route to a destination, join a traffic jam just so I have a valid excuse to do nothing but listen to the book. I like long books as I like to get value for money!
This book marks the first time that I haven't done this. It took me about 6 months to get through it.
It is easy to listen to, but not gripping. The characters are not strongn but they are likeable; like extended families, you have fun when you see them but are not too fussed if one year fades into the next between visit. I sometimes had pangs to see how they were getting on and would listen for a few hours, over a few days but then nothing for weeks.
I guess there are better things to spend your money on but it wouldn't be a waste if you purchased this!
"Great read and great listen too."
Wonderful book and wonderfully narrated/performed by Gerri Halligan, who brought all the characters to life.
Would love to see all of Jilly Coopers books available as audio books and narrated by Gerri.
