Publisher's summary

In the Light of the Garden is a novel about unearthed family secrets, the enchantment of past loves, and the indelible power of forgiveness.

Inheriting her grandparents' island estate on Florida's Gulf coast is a special kind of homecoming for thirty-one-year-old Charity Baxter. Raised by a narcissistic single mother, Charity's only sense of a loving home comes from childhood summers spent with Gramps and Grandma. But piercing her fondest memories is her sharpest grief - the death of her beloved grandmother, when Charity stopped believing in the magical healing power of the weeping willow that still casts a shadow on their property.

Now that Charity has returned, she's full of longing and regret, until she befriends her neighbor Dalton Reynolds, who has come to Gaslamp Island carrying his own heartache. As other exiles arrive - a great uncle harboring secrets, a teenage runaway - Charity begins to reconsider what makes a family. When her own estranged mother shows up in crisis, Charity is challenged to search her heart for forgiveness. But forgiving herself may require a little magic from the last place she'd expect to find it.

Engaging

Very good story with lots of twists and turns. And I think this one was free with prime reading and I just paid a couple dollars to upgrade to audible. Great feature thanks Amazon!

Willow tree

What a fantastic book! Of hurt, suffering& sorrow. Changed to happiness, trust, smiles and love! And it all happened after sitting beneath the willow tree! Loved this book and having it on audio book, made it that much more magical!

The “magic” was unnecessary and the main character was a bit of an idiot

There were moments when I was very into this book, but many more moments were I rolled my eyes.

The “magic” was part of the problem. If you can deal with magic trees, that will help. But the bigger problem is that the main character, Charity, drove me a bit crazy. She’s supposed to be in her early thirties but she’s incredibly juvenile and immature. I won’t go into detail to avoid spoilers but her reactions to nearly every event were bizarre, counterintuitive, and really annoying.

I will say that the audio book is quite well performed.

Layered delight

This story is an onion! Just when I thought I had everything figured out, another piece was put in play. Hurts old and new are brought into the open. Each character must deal with his or her past, forgive others and forgive him or herself. Magical willows and special ingredients aside, this story sparkles with emotion. It is as unique a love story as I’ve ever encountered. Highly recommend.

In the light of the garden

In the light of the garden is sad at times and the characters go through a lot of changes and growth as they interact with the weeping willow tree in the garden. Family secrets are slowly revealed and friendship are made between an unlikely group as there lived are mingled together. Heather Burch knows how to slowly unravel the story guiding you along into the lives of the characters until you feel like you are apart of it.
