When Mahony returns to Mulderrig, a speck of a place on Ireland's west coast, he brings only his handsome face, a photograph of his long-lost mother and a determination to do battle with the village's lies.
Mahony also somehow wakes the dead from their graves, with their foggy memories and hidden stories floating greyly amongst the unseeing living. No one, though - living or dead - will be able to guess what happened to the teenage mother who abandoned him as a baby.

"It’s utterly original and deeply enjoyable. It smacks you in the face from the first page and for the rest of the novel strokes your cheek." (Canongate)

"Brilliant narration of a great story."
This is a classic 'Who Dunnit?' that is written incredibly well. Full of belly laughs as well.
The narration is probably the best that I've heard on Audible.
Well worth your time!

"Highly Recommended -- loved it!"
Thoroughly enjoyable. Beautiful descriptions, dark, ethereal, laugh out loud - Jess Kidd has a masterful way with words.. I love the character Mrs Cauley. Sublime narration - just perfect, am in love!
Funny, touching, vivid. Well worth taking a chance on. I will be watching out for her next book.
"Quite Simply fantastic!"
This book was superb! from start to finish the author and narrator have you hooked. There are actual laugh out loud moments that defuse moments of high tension or sadness.
Compelling story narrated with warmth and humour. The magic and fantasy are subsumed in the overwhelming reality of the protagonist's journey. Will listen to this again and again.
I really enjoyed this book - the narrator was also really good. Didn't want to stop listening till the end!
"I listened to it twice over..."
I did, and I would.
I have never been one to revisit books or films if I've enjoyed them, preferring to maintain the sense of fulfilment and loss that a good story gives, but as this was such an absolute pleasure to immerse myself in, I listened too it all over again almost immediately. I'm glad I did, the second time around I enjoyed the anticipation of segments I knew were coming and the revelation of details I'd missed previously.
Mrs Cawley. I could see every detail of her such was the expertise of the author.
The narrator was perfect. That's all I can say.
No, it needs (well, from me) concentration and time to absorb and relish it.
I found the author's style most beguiling, poetic even and very much look forward to the next book.
