The year is 1863 and the Confederacy is on the run. As a spy behind Confederate lines, he will intercept crucial information that could provide the turning point in a bloody, tragic war. But the young daredevil finds himself playing the part of turncoat and Confederate officer all too well, as infatuation for an indomitable Rebel Belle becomes a deeper, more dangerous sentiment.

But the war has changed them all so utterly that they'll barely recognize one another when they are reunited.

Owen knows those trails and hopes the don, who has never made the trip before, might be in need of a guide.

Over five decades, Joseph's life becomes enmeshed with the political intrigues of two of Saigon's most influential families, the French colonist Devrauxs, and the native Trans - and inevitably with Vietnam's turbulent, war torn fate.
