Story
Mark Franklin came from the American West to Edwardian England with two long-barrelled .44s in his baggage and a fortune in silver in the bank. Where he had got it and what he was looking for no one could guess, although they wondered -- at Scotland Yard, in City offices, in the glittering theatreland of the West End, in the highest circles of Society (even King Edward was puzzled) and in the humble pub at Castle Lancing.

Story
Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

Story
The Great Game between Victorian Britain and Tsarist Russia was fought across desolate terrain from the Caucasus to China, over the lonely passes of the Parmirs and Karakorams, in the blazing Kerman and Helmund deserts, and through the caravan towns of the old Silk Road - both powers scrambling to control access to the riches of India and the East. When play first began, the frontiers of Russia and British India lay 2000 miles apart; by the end, this distance had shrunk to 20 miles at some points.

This is the story of Jim Dixon, a hapless lecturer in medieval history at a provincial university who knows better than most that “there was no end to the ways in which nice things are nicer than nasty ones.” Kingsley Amis’s scabrous debut leads the audience through a gallery of emphatically English bores, cranks, frauds, and neurotics with whom Dixon must contend in one way or another in order to hold on to his cushy academic perch and win the girl of his fancy.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Publisher's summary
The story of what happened to Flashman, the caddish bully of Tom Brown's Schooldays, after he was expelled in drunken disgrace from Rugby school in the late 1830s. This is the first of George Macdonald Fraser's hilarious satires starring Harry Paget Flashman.
Critic reviews
"Hilariously funny." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Great dirty fun!" (Grand Rapids Press)
"The most entertaining anti-hero in a long time.... Moves from one ribald and deliciously corrupt episode to the next.... Wonderful and scandalous." (Publishers Weekly)

Story
George MacDonald was a master storyteller, the author of beautiful fictions such as Phantastes, Sir Gibbie, and The Princess and the Goblin. The story of Lilith is no different. A brilliant piece that dives deep into the human conscience. Some believe this is MacDonald's darkest story. It has been said that C. S. Lewis was fascinated with this work. A fantasy indeed, but as with much of MacDonald's work, living truths are ingrained within. Enjoy.

Story
Arkady and Boris Strugatsky are widely considered the greatest of Russian science fiction masters, yet the novel they worked hardest on, the one that was their own favorite and that listeners worldwide have acclaimed their magnum opus, has never before been published in English. The Doomed City was so politically risky that the Strugatskys kept its existence a secret even from their closest friends for 16 years. It was only published in Russia during perestroika in the late 1980s, the last of their works to see publication.

Story
The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

Story
Gates of Fire puts you at the side of valiant Spartan warriors in 480 BC for the bloody, climactic battle at Thermopylae. There, a few hundred of Sparta’s finest sacrificed their lives to hold back the invading Persian millions. The time they bought enabled the Greeks to rally - saving, according to ancient historian Herodotus, “Western democracy and freedom from perishing in the cradle.” How did the Spartans accomplish this superhuman feat? This is what the King of Persia hopes to learn from the sole Spartan survivor.

Flashmaniacs Rejoice!!!
Would you consider the audio edition of Flashman to be better than the print version?
Far superior, the audio edition is perfect for people unfamiliar with British military history or many of the historical figures of Flashman's age.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Flashman?
Flashman's duel of honor, ( in which he fixes the outcome) which sets the ball rolling for his "heroics" in Afghanistan. He becomes the talk of military society and his gentlemenly conduct lauded when in reality his dishonesty saved his bacon from the fire.... the beginning of many such hilarious situations our protagonist finds himself in.
Have you listened to any of David Case’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to many of his performances, and this one is just as excellent. Great voices in Mr. Cases repitoire.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not just this audio Flashman but all in the "Flashman Papers" series!!!! Please bring us Flashman's Lady and Flashman in the Great Game and convert abridged into unabridged format.
Any additional comments?
The Flashman papers will take you on a rollicking adventure through the annals of British Military history through the eyes of a cowardly, bullying, lechering, and most of all hilarious British officer in the 19th Century. You are in for a treat!!!

Cads, rogues, and a Little History-
What did you love best about Flashman?
I'm a historical history buff and I enjoy taking my history with a spoonful of sugar.
I love the fast moving story line and Flashman, he just tickles me.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Flashy of course. Sometimes you get tired of the traditional hero and are in the mood for a Cowardly Rogue.
What about David Case’s performance did you like?
Narrator was perfect, he just seemed to catch the irony of Flashman in his intonations. I'm American but I found his English Accent understandable and just downright enjoyable
Any additional comments?

Amazing
The historical backdrop is enthralling. In fact, because of this book, I went to Wikipedia and researched the First Afghan war. Many of the characters listed from history are included in this book. The antics of Flashman are embarrassing, frantic and totally not correct according to our modern world. But then this is not 1840 when England ruled the world. Or at least tried to. A very enjoyable book. I highly recommend.
