Dr. Arnold's idealism transferred itself wholesale to the young Hughes, and the good doctor appears towards the end of Tom Brown's Schooldays as the young master, bearing the light of possible redemption.

Hugh Bonneville more than just a screen actor!

A wonderful and eye-opening account of English public school life in the 1830s (although a fair amount of not irksome moralizing by the author) and a tremendous performance by Hugh Bonneville who is outstanding with voices and various types of British accents.

Read with passion!! Excellent!

This historical still in print book was read so well by the narrator that I highly recommend it!!

I liked this story very much, both because of the reader, and the way in which it is written.

Definitive performance of an enchanting classic!

"Tom Brown's Schooldays" is a funny, poignant, and enchanting coming-of-age novel that is a true classic. It has been continuously in print since 1857, for good reason. Newcomers who discover this gem are immediately swept along with the likeable hero and his relatable scrapes. This novel created the genre of schoolboy stories, like "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" and so many others, but "Tom Brown" remains the first among equals. I came to this book from the "Flashman" series of G. M. Fraser, which spins off from "Tom Brown," and I was not disappointed! The performance by Hugh Bonneville is perfect: Tom Brown comes to life under his narration, so much so that it hard to imagine a different voice for the character. HIGHLY recommended!!!

The Greatness of Britain

Half remembering the BBC adaptation from the early seventies ("That's dashed decent of you, East!!" became a catchphrase in my house for a time) and the riotous parody by Michael Palin (the school leopard, the maggot pit, the Hop...), I thought I knew what to expect, a ripping yarn of period schoolboy japes. How wrong I was! This was far more satisfying and though-provoking, in part thanks to Hugh Bonneville's sensitive performance (clearly a man with fond recollections of his own schooldays). The eternal question of what education is for rings through the recounted episodes, with its highest ideals embodied in the great Dr Arnold. (If this is a true account he must go down as one of the most influential Victorians, since Rugbeians would have been truly fitted by his tutelage to build a worldwide Empire. And all they were taught was Latin and Greek!!) The stalwart Tom is a clear forerunner of other British schoolboy heroes such as Biggles, Jennings, Billy Bunter, his namesake William, and Harry Potter in later years. For a compendium of the values that made Britain great, this recording cannot be highly enough recommended.

A wonderful classic!

A coming of age novel that teaches the power of mentoring, friendship, and love. Tom Brown’s Schooldays touched my heart deeply.

I have enjoyed the 3 versions of the movie that I have seen. I was excited to find this on Audible! very well narrated by Hugh Bonneville! the book is very much different from the 3 movie versions, but still great! a must read!
