Publisher's summary

Two-time Christy Award winner Lynn Austin is hailed for her inspiring historical novels. As in Candle in the Darkness Austin transports us back to the turbulence of the Civil War.

Julia, a wealthy Philadelphia socialite is forced to overcome great obstacles and look for deeper meaning in her life when her intended describes her as shallow. Despite social restrictions on single women, she pursues a vocation as a battlefield nurse. Julia finds a kindred spirit in Phoebe, a West Virginia farm girl who dresses in men's clothing in order to be a soldier. Strength of character, determination, and faith foster their transformation into womanhood.

Winner of Library Journal's Best Christian Fiction Award for 2003, this novel portrays wholesome values. Christina Moore gives a warm narration of this well-crafted story.

Civil War romance

I thoroughly enjoy the way Lynn Austin brings the reader into a different time and place and through well defined characters helps me intimately understand life at that point.

warms your heart

This was a good story, especially if you are looking for a good book without filthy language and disgusting topics. It gave me a real appreciation for what women through the years have went through so that we can be free to follow our dreams and not be limited to certain career choices. It also reminded me of what a blood bath the Civil war was. I can't imagine what it must have been like living in those times.

Everyone is a Preacher

This is a remarkable book in the way it brings to life the people who lived through the Civil War in a way no other book I have read has done. You quickly begin to care a great deal about the two main characters and the people they care about too. The author has done a creative job of converting the facts of her research into a lively story that keeps going strong to the very end. While the ending becomes predictable about three-quarters through, it still is very satisfying to the last page, when it's hard to part with characters who have become very important.

That said, there is a great deal of "preaching" going on throughout the book; each character in his own time and place is quoting as much Scripture as the real preacher, and it gets tedious. And its completely unnecessary, as the maxim "Actions speak louder than words" applies very much to the main characters. Their decisions in life speak all that needs to be said to prove that they're living by their Christian principles. The maxim "Show, don't tell" is one which this author should cultivate.

However, I am pleased to give this book four stars on the strength of the historical research and the powerful story which the author has created from it. It is well worth reading.

Outstandingly captivating tale of people caught up in the Civil War

Lynn Austin’s creative imagination is woven once again into a biblically centric development of the characters with captivating intensity, suspense and even humor justaposed in a masterful way against such a horrifyingly tragic backdrop of the Civil war. I have read several of her novels and each one seems to surpass the last one in their historical context, drawing out profound insights both within the characters and in this reader. Another superb book by Lynn Austin!
