Publisher's Summary

WELCOME TO THE RUSHMORE INN

The bed and breakfast was hidden in the hills of West Virginia. Wary guests wondered how it could stay in business at such a creepy, remote location. Especially with its bizarre, presidential decor and eccentric proprietor.

ONCE YOU CHECK IN...

When the event hotel for the national Iron Woman triathlon accidentally overbooked, competitor Maria was forced to stay at the Rushmore. But after checking into her room, she quickly realized she wasn't alone. First her suitcase wasn't where she put it. Then her cell phone was moved. Finally, she heard an odd creaking under the bed. Confusion quickly turned to fear, and fear to hysteria when she discovered the front door was barred and the windows were bricked over. There was no way out.

...YOU'LL BE DYING TO LEAVE

One year later, four new female athletes have become guests of the Inn. Will they escape the horrors within its walls? Or will they join the many others who have died there, in ways too terrible to imagine?

ENDURANCE by Jack Kilborn
Are you brave enough to finish?

A Word of Warning

Originally scheduled to be released in paperback in 2010, the publisher read the final version of the manuscript and refused to release it.

This is a disturbing, terrifying book. You may think you're brave enough to handle it. But you're probably not...

    "Endurance"

This has to be one of the goriest, most violent books I've ever read. It's plot (?) is outRAGEOUSly impossible. As for me, that's what I expect for a book in this category. So if you like gory books, this a 5 star one. I took away a lot of points because of the narrator. I give him a minus 1 star. Awful. Maybe he's trying to sound like Will Patton, but he fails miserably. Awful voices. Annoying drawl.
Overall though, I still wanted to finish it to see how it ended. Not always true with a lot of books.
Gory, gross and gruesome. I cringed several times and I LOVE horror stories! Got what I paid for.

    "Crazy Messed Up Book"

I snagged this book because I saw the title and the mention of triathlon. I like mystery/horror novels and I'm an endurance athlete, so I thought it would be an interesting combination of the two. But the triathlon doesn't really have much play in the story... Which is an incredibly messed up story. How can someone come up with such gory, bloody and horrible things? I think I would have liked this book better if I had read it, because when reading it I can skim over things that start to feel too graphic. With the audio performance it really sticks in your head. Also, I like to listen to audiobooks at 2x speed, but it is virtually impossible to do that with this one because of the narrator's voices, it becomes too garbled and unintelligible. I kind of wish I'd spent the listening time on something else!

"A little too dramatic and unreal"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If you don't mind hyper fiction, it's a decent book to pass time. However, if you prefer stories that are a little more believable, don't waste your money!

Would you be willing to try another book from Jack Kilborn? Why or why not?

Not at this point. Too far out there...l

Which character – as performed by Christopher Lane – was your favorite?

    don't remember

Do you think Endurance needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    hell no

"PEOPLE CHECK IN, BUT THEY DON'T CHECK OUT"

THE PERSON WHO TOOK MY LEGS, IS UNDER THE BED
It is black or white on rather you will love or hate this book, and you will do one of the two. If you enjoy slasher movies and/or you are the type to pay extra to see the freaks at the circus, you will love this. If you do not enjoy such things you will hate this. I'M SURROUNDED BY FREAKS.

    Q: WHAT DO YOU WANT
A: I WANT TO WATCH YOU BLEED.
If you are still reading then you will love this, so how does this compare to other Konrath scary books? I have read three of Konrath's science fiction books and this is my third scary or dark book. This is a five star book, but I did like Trapped best and then Afraid and then this. I'm sure I should not admit to it, but I have always been fascinated by inbreeding and the results. X-Files has an episode involving an inbreeding family that I liked a lot. Due to Man's silly belief that leadership is in the blood, we have several examples of inbreeding throughout our history with the Kings and Queens and Pharaohs. The premise for this story is a family who has Roosevelt blood and believes they can breed a new president. Through most of the book I was shocked and grossed out, but I will admit toward the end, it did get to the point of enough already. Konrath got to the point where he was just coming up with all the weird oddities he could think up and the story got a bit redundant. I also did not find the Mountain Lion scary, nor did I think it fit into the story that well. I realize that Mountain Lions are nothing to be messed with, but it was just a regular everyday mountain lion.

You can not compare Konrath to Koontz or King, these guys have totally different styles. King and Koontz write scary mess with your head stuff, sometimes with character development and usually a political message. Konrath writes dark, gory, shocking stuff, without character development or any messages. He is just trying to entertain.

The narrator is very good. He does have to do several red necks and many of them do sound the same, but this is not a character driven story, so it did not matter. I did not think when he was doing the regular narration and not doing characters, that he needed to stay in the red neck voice and it would have sounded better if he had not done so. Just my thought and it was certainly not done to the point of distraction.

    "Gross, Disgusting, Sick & Gruesome"

I have to say that this was the most gross, gory, disgustingly sick book I've ever read or heard. Yes.... I listened to the whole thing - to see where the author would go next. When I read the review, it sounded like an interesting storyline and the first chapter or two drew me in - people missing in the woods and a scary motel. But the sick, bloody ideas that this author created makes me actually wonder about him - how can an author even come up with this? Without telling too much about the actual story - it's totally far-fetched & unbelievable. The author relies on gore to create a 'story'. The narrator turned out to be just the right person to read this type of book - his voice is creepy and sounds like a back-hills sociopath. If you like blood & guts, are on the border of being a serial killer yourself and like to look at bloody accident scenes, then this book is for you.

"Yuck - couldn't even finish it. Ridiculous."

You know those stupid movies that you watch, scratch your head & say "well there's 2 hrs of my life wasted"? That's how I felt and I only listened to 30 mins. of this ridiculous book. It is SOOO predictable and one big backwoods cliche! Don't waste your money like I did - next..........

    "Absolutely deliciously horrifying"

Absolutely love this book. Jack Kilborn definitely a fave author now! If you are a quesy person, I warn you not to read. I'm a true Stephen king fan and this is up there with his most gory. Cannibals, rape, sadistic hill billies... This book literally turned me into a vegetarian. Must read and I warn don't read in dark or alone if your imagination is like mine...
