WELCOME TO THE RUSHMORE INN
The bed and breakfast was hidden in the hills of West Virginia. Wary guests wondered how it could stay in business at such a creepy, remote location. Especially with its bizarre, presidential decor and eccentric proprietor.
ONCE YOU CHECK IN...
When the event hotel for the national Iron Woman triathlon accidentally overbooked, competitor Maria was forced to stay at the Rushmore. But after checking into her room, she quickly realized she wasn't alone. First her suitcase wasn't where she put it. Then her cell phone was moved. Finally, she heard an odd creaking under the bed. Confusion quickly turned to fear, and fear to hysteria when she discovered the front door was barred and the windows were bricked over. There was no way out.
...YOU'LL BE DYING TO LEAVE
One year later, four new female athletes have become guests of the Inn. Will they escape the horrors within its walls? Or will they join the many others who have died there, in ways too terrible to imagine?

A Word of Warning
Originally scheduled to be released in paperback in 2010, the publisher read the final version of the manuscript and refused to release it.
This is a disturbing, terrifying book. You may think you're brave enough to handle it. But you're probably not...

I am brutally honest. Popular, love everything they read, reviewers are scared to go neg. and risk their ranking. It's your money!!!
THE PERSON WHO TOOK MY LEGS, IS UNDER THE BED
It is black or white on rather you will love or hate this book, and you will do one of the two. If you enjoy slasher movies and/or you are the type to pay extra to see the freaks at the circus, you will love this. If you do not enjoy such things you will hate this. I'M SURROUNDED BY FREAKS.
Q: WHAT DO YOU WANT
A: I WANT TO WATCH YOU BLEED.
If you are still reading then you will love this, so how does this compare to other Konrath scary books? I have read three of Konrath's science fiction books and this is my third scary or dark book. This is a five star book, but I did like Trapped best and then Afraid and then this. I'm sure I should not admit to it, but I have always been fascinated by inbreeding and the results. X-Files has an episode involving an inbreeding family that I liked a lot. Due to Man's silly belief that leadership is in the blood, we have several examples of inbreeding throughout our history with the Kings and Queens and Pharaohs. The premise for this story is a family who has Roosevelt blood and believes they can breed a new president. Through most of the book I was shocked and grossed out, but I will admit toward the end, it did get to the point of enough already. Konrath got to the point where he was just coming up with all the weird oddities he could think up and the story got a bit redundant. I also did not find the Mountain Lion scary, nor did I think it fit into the story that well. I realize that Mountain Lions are nothing to be messed with, but it was just a regular everyday mountain lion.
You can not compare Konrath to Koontz or King, these guys have totally different styles. King and Koontz write scary mess with your head stuff, sometimes with character development and usually a political message. Konrath writes dark, gory, shocking stuff, without character development or any messages. He is just trying to entertain.
The narrator is very good. He does have to do several red necks and many of them do sound the same, but this is not a character driven story, so it did not matter. I did not think when he was doing the regular narration and not doing characters, that he needed to stay in the red neck voice and it would have sounded better if he had not done so. Just my thought and it was certainly not done to the point of distraction.
If you like horror stories, you'll love this one. Christopher Lane's narration was excellent and the story kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't stop listening even as the evening hour became late and the action freaked me out.
Narration was very well done. The book became too horror filled for me to listen to and drive.
If you like horror this might be for you. Creeepy!
I like a book that mixes horror and comedy - it's an awkward blend of suspense and release.
Jump scares, horrible writing, cliche ending upon ending upon ending - I honestly expected Chewbacca to growl in triumph as the cast turned to the camera for the grand finale.
I stuck with it. So you don't get one star. The idea for the story was great, and I bet the story itself would be great if somebody helped clear out the clutter of cliches and abuse of adverbs, predictable moments, and two-dimensional, (can a character be one-dimensional?) characters. Oh, so very very disappointing.
This is one of the scariest books I have listened to in a long while! Living in the country and working the late shift, I was running to my house when I got home from work! I've always loved reading horror and am no stranger to the thing under the stairs and this book was great fun!
I'm only about 2 hours into this story but I have had to stop listening. Although the story is creepy and scary (that's a good thing!) it provides some very graphic and disturbing scenes. I will delete this from my library and hope that the nasty images can be deleted from my memory.
I suppose I didn't realize this was a Horror book. For me, more of a story and less horror, would have improved this book. I couldn't even complete it. The horror wasn't suspenseful or well written at all. It was immature and gratuitous and seemed more in line with what a 15 year old boy would write.
Horrific, requires endurance, non-stop listening!
The voices of Christopher Lane. The insanely morbid imagination of Jack Kilborn.
All of Christopher Lane's performances are incredible! I look for his name first and then to see if I want to listen to the book. A book can be ruined if you don't like the performance of the narrator.
I'm not sure i Would Listen to it again because i don't typically do the read/listen thing twice.
He brings the west Virginia country sound to it and i would have a hard time building the characters voices, and there are many! It took me some time to get used to the country sounding voices but he did a great job holding characters to their unique voices.
Good Listen and story. If your not used to the country twang it takes a bit to get used to but the twang helps place you in the West Virginia mountains. Creepy place! :)
Again King provides us with a group of boys that break your heart, I didn't want the story to end and silly as is sounds, I missed these guys when the story was over. This is one of his better non-horror stories with a plot that turned my stomach into knots each time the characters crossed another hurtle.
