Beverly Jenkins’ historical romances have earned her a Golden Pen Award from the Black Writers’ Guild and two Career Achievement Awards from Romantic Times.
Set in 19th-century California, Destiny’s Embrace introduces listeners to ranch owner Logan Yates, who must come to terms with his true feelings for Mariah Cooper, his beautiful, headstrong housekeeper. I would recommend this book to a friend, as I would with all BJ novels. However, I would suggest that you read the book before listening to the audio book. I think you could get the wrong impression of how great a writer Ms BJ is if you only listen to this performance.
I usually love Shari Peele's narrations. In fact, I was excited to see that she was narrating this story. However, this was not one of her best performances. The meter was off, and it was very slow. It felt like it was dragging. Also her voices sounded pretty similar, especially the male characters. Her accents were also off. I have heard her do a really good Spanish inflected English accent in other audio books, but in this one it was just off at times. I love her narration of modern stories, but I didn't really care for her performance of this historical romance.
Yes, I would read another book from Jenkins. No, I will not listen to Shari Peele again.
The setting and the historical context. Very well done and believable.
Don't know...but see below
I would give this book at 2.5 rating.
This is the first time I've read a romance novel of this type in a VERY long time. I read books like this when I was a teenager, but they hardly ever had characters of color. I was beyond ecstatic to read a HISTORICAL romance novel with people of color.
Jenkins definitely did well with the historical aspect of the novel. I believed the setting and was more than willing to go along with it. Overall, I enjoyed the light reading, but the writing itself left much to be desired. I wasn't expecting literary fiction, so the clichés were something that I wasn't surprised about. However, I was hoping for a juicier plot. Honestly, if I had read this when I was a teen, I'd totally be in love. I like Mariah and Logan and the rest of the characters, but was waiting for something to happen to them. I think I may be too old to be completely satisfied with this HEA...
As for the narration, I felt very dirty listening to my Auntie read me a nasty book. She tried to differentiate her voice some, but it sounded more like a writer doing a reading than a voice actor doing a narration. But, not everyone can be Davina Porter.
enjoyed this book very much. the story was very entertaining. listened to it in less than a day.
A love , u can never denies new place, love , rock throwing and knee kicking, and fine as man and woman under his roof, a 30 year virgin!!!!!! Couldn't put it down. Great narrator.
