Publisher's summary

Elizabeth and Nathaniel Bonner have settled into their life together at the edge of the New-York wilderness in the winter of 1794. But soon after Elizabeth gives birth to healthy twins, Nathaniel learns that his father has been arrested in British Canada. Forced to leave Hidden Wolf Mountain to help his father in Montreal, Nathaniel himself is imprisoned and in danger of being hanged as a spy.

In a desperate bid to save her husband, Elizabeth bundles her infants and sets out through the snowy wilderness and across treacherous waterways on the dangerous trek to Canada. But she soon discovers that freeing her husband will take every ounce of her courage and inventiveness - and will threaten her with the loss of what she loves most: her children.

Torn apart, the Bonners must embark on yet another perilous voyage, this time all the way across the ocean to the heart of Scotland, where a destiny they could never have imagined awaits them....

Intense

I could not put it down! I found myself intensely drawn into Elizabeth's plight; for both Nathaniel and her twin babies and their perils far from Lake in the Clouds. I can't wait to start the next in the series!

This book was better than the 1st.

I wasna all that impressed with Reading in book one, but I must commend her on this one. S h e had to handle British, Scots, French, Indian, American Indian, and Southern and Midwest English. Although Nathaniel still sounds flat, Donati's characterization makes him a very fine catch. Donati wove a very believable web of circumstances and so I am on to book 3. I recommend these books for anyone who likes tales set in this time period, but if you like "bodice rippers" (I do not), you need to move on.

Interesting story

I only have one complaint. Nathaniel lives as a Native American. I’ve listened to multiple books abt Native Americans. I’ve never heard any of them use the word “ain’t”. He uses it throughout the book. It does not sound right at all. Even though he’s white, everything else abt his life is Native American. So my recommendation, for what it’s worth, would be to remove the many “ain’ts”. :)

Excellent Series

This was another great listen. The first & second books came together perfectly and I enjoyed the second as much as I did the first. I can't wait to hear the next book.
