Publisher's summary

Winner of the 2001 Christy Award, Lynn Austin captures the turmoil of the Civil War in this stirring novel. From vast plantations to the cramped closets of the Underground Railroad, it follows one young woman's inspiring journey of risk and sacrifice.

Caroline Fletcher, the daughter of a wealthy family in Richmond, has never questioned her father's right to own slaves. But after a lengthy visit to her uncle's home in Boston, she learns of the abolitionist movement. Now, knowing that slavery is against God's will, she must risk betraying the people she loves to obey her convictions.

Compelling characters and the searing conflicts between North and South create a vivid canvas for Caroline's struggle to make the right decisions. Through Christina Moore's hearfelt narration, Candle in the Darkness burns even brighter.

Great book!

Terrific throughout. I LOVE Eli, and his conversations abt “Massa Jesus”! The only reason I’m not doing five stars is bc I needed an epilogue. ☺️ The ending was too abrupt for me. ☺️

Great book!

If I could have read/listened to this book while in U.S. history class, it would have increased my interest of history. Loved this story!

great listen

Really enjoyed listening to this book. Narrator was excellent and the storyline kept my interest. I learnt a lot about the Civil War and the emotions from both sides were quite heart rendering ( I'm not from the USA). Well worth the listen

Just ok for me.

This was just ok for me, I read A light to My Path 1st, and I liked it a little bit better than this one. . They are both Christian based and very entertaining. I gave it four stars because it kept my interest.
I will watch out for more by this author.

I couldn't stop listening to this book!

T have read this book through 3 times. I was just as captured by it the 3rd time as I had been the 1st time I read it. Lynn Austin pulls you in to every scene making you feel like a part of the story. As you meet the characters, one by one, they feel as though they are long time friends, I really enjoy all her books. She does a lot of research and uses correct details while telling the story. Her books are heart warming and always leave me wanting more!
