Bravo!

This is a truly beautiful story of love and grace and truth! I cried because Otis and Lizzy (representative of all the slaves of that era) were so hopeful for a better future. Yes, they were free, but so many, many Daniels of that day never changed their violent ways and passed their hatred down to their children and it went down through the generations and is still alive in some hearts. I wish so much that things like what they did to Black Wall Street, etc. never happened! I wish so much that the people of that day would have known the true love and grace of God.

WONDERFUL!!!! Enjoyed this book to the fullest!

I am quickly becoming biased in favor of ANY Lynn Austin book. Her books are worth every penny that I spend. I always get a wonderful history lesson, feel like I'm getting a front seat perspective of the storyline, and get engrossed in the excellently developed characters. This story was sooooo good and had great narration. Highly recommeded.

Lynn Austin never disappoints

Robin Miles narration is outstanding. She makes this good read into a great listen. Lynn Austin never fails to bring authenticity in the details of the time period. She has not disappointed me yet.

What a wonderful story.

Another fantastic story by Lynn Austin! Josephine was my favorite heroine. Slavery was so wrong; Pride is a sin.

My new favorite book!

I am so sad that the story is over! Getting a peek at the life and times of the post-Civil war South was an eye-opener. I was constantly frustrated by the way women were "supposed" to act and am thankful I have grown up in a different era. But our issues of faith (or lack of it) haven't changed! We still struggle with the "why" questions just as people have always done. And like the characters in the book, we continue to see God working His plan in these times.

Relatable history

I was very impressed with this book. I feel like I gained knowledge of this post civil war time period. The author does such a fantastic job of pulling you right into the lives of these characters. Even though the story deals with such hard issues like slavery and abuse, she offers several vantage points on what life must have been like for some southerners & former slaves coming to grips with the tragedies of war as well as freedoms and gender roles. Honestly, this book had more layers to dive into than I was expecting and the brilliant narration made it come alive in my imagination. Very impressed all around!

South in healing

Really enjoyed this book of the South's healing. It wasn't an easy time but healing can always be done through God's grace.
