A Day Late and a Dollar Short

Publisher's Summary

The Prices are introduced by Viola, the family's outspoken matriarch: Her husband, Cecil, has shut the door behind him for the last time; and their four adult kids, scattered across the country, seem determined to send her to her grave, or at least to the hospital with worrying. Paris is divorced, mother to a nearly seventeen-year-old son and the one who always comes to everybody's rescue, although she doesn't have a clue as to how to save herself. Lewis is the scapegoat, and his troubles keep landing him in jail, which only seems to confirm what his family thinks he is. Out in Chicago, Charlotte knows she's gotten the short end of the stick for years, has "nothing in common except blood" with her parents and siblings and would just as soon divorce them all. Janelle, the baby of the family, is not only on the defensive about the course of her own life but she's facing a new crisis, a fast-brewing storm with her teenage daughter that threatens more than she's willing to admit. And don't even ask Viola about Cecil: "He's a bad habit I've had for thirty-eight years which would make him my husband." But Cecil has some ideas for taking his hardworking life into his own hands, regardless of what his wife and kids think about it.

    "This book is great."

Instead of having one person tell the whole story, Terry McMillan allows all of the major characters to tell the story. The mother begins telling the story. She then describes her (family) husband, children, and grandchildren in a way that only a mother, wife, and grandmother can. It was downright hilarious. To my surprise, however, the husband and children tell their opinions on the family and themselves. When you see how the family sees a person as opposed to how the person sees themselves you begin to think about some of the attitudes you have towards members of your own family. The beginning of the book will have you cracking up and by the end you will be in tears.

    "Enjoyable Listen"
Would you consider the audio edition of A Day Late and a Dollar Short to be better than the print version?

I read a few reviews about voice styles and was a little concerned about trying an audible book. I read a few of the early chapters in the book and wasn't disappointed with the audible version.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a good down-to-earth and in some cases real-life read.

What about Terry McMillan’s performance did you like?

I wasn't sure which voice was hers.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My husband and I listened to the book while driving to a vacation spot and we laughed through most parts of it. Overall I thought the characters were quite realistic.

    Story
"This story will make you call your mother.."
What made the experience of listening to A Day Late and a Dollar Short the most enjoyable?

I like the fact that they used different narrators for the male and female voices. It makes you connect more with the characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Day Late and a Dollar Short?

At the end when they were reading the letters that their mother left them. It was as if she knew that she was going to be leaving them soon and she needed to make sure she let them know how much she loved them and wanted them to have a better life after she was gone. Also the fact she was helping them remember that they are connected and joined as a family and they needed to up lift one another and get back to being sisters and brother joined together.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Oh yes you do want to listen to it all at one time. This story held my attention through out.

I enjoy mysteries, NOT thrillers, contemporary fiction, especially about diverse cultures, and sometimes history, if it doesn't involve too many dates. I often listen to a book multiple times, discovering unnoticed details in the retelling.

    "Family members on the fringe."

This book brought me to a whole new perspective on how I relate with (or don't relate with) members of my family, especially those who don't quite fit our mold of "acceptable." I'm becoming much more keen on making each person in our family "included." I also laughed alot and had a great time listening to this.

"High School Juniors and Seniors/ Great Listening"

I thought because the book was short it wouldn't have much to say or good info. But, I was wrong!
I have a new grad who thought she knew it all, until she listened to this book. And, now she is a little bit more humble and listens to my suggestions. Sometimes it takes another VOICE in order to be heard.
