Publisher's summary

Spencer Quinn’s first original audio short story reveals how everyone’s favorite detective duo - Chet the Dog and P.I. Bernie Little - came to meet before their first big case in Dog On It. As fans know, Chet first met Bernie on that fateful day when he flunked out of K-9 police school. The details of that day, though, have always remained a little vague (like so much in Chet’s doggy brain). All we know is that Chet had been the best leaper in his K-9 class, but for some reason he failed his final leaping test...and that a cat was involved...and that there was some blood. But whose?

The test, the cat, the blood - all pieces of a puzzle that, when solved, will bring down a dangerous gang of thieves - and signal the start of a beautiful friendship. This fateful day has been alluded to in every book in the series, and now fans of Chet and Bernie will finally get to find out what actually happened. For these two beloved characters, it was something like love at first sight - and, for Chet, at first smell, too.

This short story was fun.

This was a fun read and an even better listening gig. This storyteller makes visualization very easy. If you believe that your pets are part human you will enjoy these books.

Chet and Bernie meet for the first time.

A stolen yellow Audi with pink leather seats plays an integral part in Chets' first meeting with Bernie. It's only an hour long, but you get all the Chet and Bernie nuances. Pretty doggone good.

borrow it

I recommend you borrow this title if possible. As it was on sale for one dollar I’m not returning it, but…
Yes it’s worth it if you love the series as it covers when Chet meets Bernie.
I’ve always liked Frangione’s voice so his narration always rates higher.

These stories never let me down!

Absolutely love hearing the story from Chet, the dog's, point of view. So funny and action packed. Couldn't put it down. Once you meet Chet, you will find it really hard to wait for what him and Bernie will do next.

Great Dog & Private Eye Team Mix “Go-To” Moves!

This cool audiobook is written by a dog! And narrated by him too (aided by Jim Frangione). The somewhat-large animal’s name is Chet and he assists a kind Private Eye police detective named Bernie Little: it’s the perfect canine job for Chet because he loves to stick his nose into things — which is a great help for his master! Bernie just has to lay low at times while the brave stray does the more challenging chase-down of criminals for peanuts (or bone-shaped biscuits actually, maybe crullers or Slim Jims as the case may be!)
This detective narrative is the first one (Prequel) in a popular series of Short Fiction stories (under an hour) by Spencer Quinn and it tells of the first time this twosome originally work together to solve a mystery beginning at Canine School.
A man in a Hawaiian shirt (named Bernie) arrives at the academy’s parking lot and makes chummy friends with Chet but suddenly a lady screams: her yellow car has been stolen with Beauty (her precious white cat with golden eyes) inside. And so begins this wonderfully charming tale of how Chet and Bernie join forces together to locate a hidden stash of 42 stolen cars and earn a substantial reward paycheque much needed by Bernie … and the twosome’s adventure team is born outright. More F.U.N. standalone short stories may be followed in this delightful series which includes amusing antics and lighthearted banter.

Fun but inconsistent with other stories

It's great to find out that Chet didn't flunk out of canine school just because " a cat was involved". As usual, he was solving a mystery. The wonderful chemistry between Bernie and Chet is established. But in this story, on the day he meets Chet, Bernie refers to his ex-wife. In all the other books, it's clear that Chet was around in the "Leda Days" and when Charlie was little. So I guess it's just that Chet's memory is a little confused. Maybe his first experience of Slim Jims crowded out everything else!
