Publisher's summary

One of PureWow’s 9 Books We Can’t Wait to Read in October!

A chilling look into an alternate near future where a woman and her daughter seek refuge in a women-only colony, only to find that the safe haven they were hoping for is the most dangerous place they could be.

Miranda Reynolds always thought she would rather die than live in Femlandia. But that was before the country sank into total economic collapse and her husband walked out in the harshest, most permanent way, leaving her and her 16-year-old daughter with nothing. The streets are full of looting, robbing, and killing, and Miranda and Emma no longer have much choice - either starve and risk getting murdered or find safety. And so they set off to Femlandia, the women-only colony Miranda's mother, Win Somers, established decades ago.

Although Win is no longer in the spotlight, her protégé Jen Jones has taken Femlandia to new heights: The off-grid colonies are secluded, self-sufficient, and thriving - and Emma is instantly enchanted by this idea of a safe haven. But something is not right. There are no men allowed in the colony, but babies are being born - and they're all girls. Miranda discovers just how the all-women community is capable of enduring, and it leads her to question how far her mother went to create this perfect, thriving, horrifying society.

Wow

The idea that things could really be that way is mind blowing! This was a great story, even if steeped in reality. The narrator was also very good, drew me right in!

I am a man but even I can see how men can mess things up. Very interesting story and very well performed. Thanks.

Ending left a little to be desired

Not bad story. Interesting concepts. Didn’t really like how absorbed main character was with lattes and manicures—like get it together. Weak ending but good story.

Couldn't Stop Listening!!

At first, I thought this book was going to be drawn out and boring. It took a while to get through the backstory but it turned out to be a pretty darn good book! The ending wasn't a big surprise but it was still a good one.

Not as good as VOX

Just okay. I don't regret the purchase or time spent listening. Even though Miranda was correct , she was so annoying and whined throughout the story that I ended up siding with and liking her mother Win. I am assuming the author did that intentionally. Interesting choice. An okay book but not as good as VOX. I ended up purchasing this because I was so impressed with VOX. Can't wait to see what Christina Dalcher writes next.

Trite and reductive

This story does not live up to its name. It’s character development is poor, the stale conflict(centered in expected gender roles is not nuanced and the outcome expected. It is a triumph of mediocracy.

Not a good audiobook

I stopped at one hour and a half. There are flashbacks back and forth, to different points in the past. It's very confusing because there's no transition. Maybe it works better in written form.
The main character is boring. She complains and whines about how hard and unfair life is. I just wish she would move on from that.
The performance is ok, but Audible has gotten me used to much better. In addition, the main characters are all female (so far), so it's challenging for the performer to make different voices.
