Publisher's summary

No other figure has impacted history like Jesus. Yet today, he’s often seen as a mythical character whose legend has increased over time. So what does the historical and archaeological evidence say about Jesus?

Archaeologist Dr. Titus Kennedy has investigated firsthand the discoveries connected to Jesus’ birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection. He has visited and excavated where Jesus walked and examined the artifacts connected to Jesus’ life. Here, he presents an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the research and findings that illuminate the historicity of Christ as presented in the Bible.

This book progresses chronologically through the Gospels, noting the many relevant archaeological, historical, geographic, and literary findings. As you listen, you’ll be able to decide for yourself whether the evidence confirms the existence and story of Jesus and determine whether the Gospels are worthy of being approached not as legends but as history. Further, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the historic basis of Christianity, a richer knowledge of the ancient world, and an evidence-based perspective on the reliability of the Bible.

My Top Pick for Archaeological Evidence for Jesus

EXCELLENT!....Written by an archaeologist it is chock full of archaeological evidence as well as corresponding evidence from ancient writings. It is scholarly ave detailed yet highly accessible to a popular audience. It covers a wide spectrum of the most important archaeological finds, explains the impact of their evidence in detail, and responds to critics of the evidence. Highly recommended.

Ok

The author doesn’t really get into much evidence for Jesus until almost 5 hours into the book. When he does, it is an interesting listen, but not sure I wanted to wait 5 hours to really get into the “meat” of the book. I also wasn’t a big fan of the narrator or that they decided to include the end notes in the audio version of this book. I believe leaving those out would have made for a better listen.

Good book!

An interesting book in which I learned a lot! The images in the hard copy were awesome. The audiobook was slowed down by all the reading of sources. I have nothing else to say but this stupid app won’t let me out.

Thorough but plagued by constant citing of sources

This book encompasses the life of Jesus from conception all the way through resurrection and focused on archaeological evidence associated with Jesus the person as well as the geography, cities, and buildings associated with him in the Bible. It used a wide range of sources and put them in context of local culture at the time. I felt it was thorough, but had two flaws.

The first challenge was the almost unbearable citing of sources. The narrator would say a few sentences then cite Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Josephus volumes and all the associated chapters and verses. It happened every 10 sentences or so. Many a time I almost quit the book. I would say 20% of the book’s content is citing sources. It would have far more efficient and less assaulting on the ears just to have a PDF with chapter and footnotes.

The second challenge, albeit not near as tough, was the author’s biases toward the divinity of Jesus. I’m a believer myself; however the biases clashed with the book’s core strength which was archaeological objectivity. The biases climaxed near the end when describing the resurrection.

Overall I am glad I got the book. It’s good but takes discipline to not gnash one’s teeth through all the constant citing of sources.
