Publisher's summary

A clear guide to help you understand why you can trust the Bible.

We are often told we can no longer assume that the Bible is trustworthy. From social media memes to popular scholarship, so many attacks have been launched on the believability of Scripture that many have serious questions about the Bible, such as:

  • Did Jesus actually live?
  • Did the biblical writers invent their message?
  • How can we trust the gospels since they were written so long after Jesus lived?
  • How can we believe a Bible that is full of internal contradictions with itself and external contradictions with science?
  • Aren't the biblical manuscripts we have just copies of copies that are so corrupted they don't represent what the original authors wrote?
  • Why should we believe the books that are in the Bible, since many good ones were left out, like the Gospel of Thomas?
  • Why trust the Bible when there are so many contradictory translations of it?

If you find yourself unable to answer questions such as these, but wanting to, Why I Trust the Bible by eminent Bible scholar and translator William Mounce is for you. These questions and more are discussed and answered in a reasoned, definitive, and winsome way.

The truth is that the Bible is better attested and more defensible today than it ever has been. Questions about the Bible are perhaps the most significant challenge confronting Christian faith today, but they can be answered well and in a way that will lead to a deeper appreciation for the truth and ongoing relevance of the Bible.

The extensive knowledge

Very knowledgeable and informative. I very much liked hearing these arguments from someone who has spent so much time researching and thinking about them.

This is a must listen/read for every serious student of the Bible. It equips for defense of the faith, but most especially the integrity of the inerrancy of Scripture. Thanks bazillion, Bill.

Excellent Resource

Mounce wrote this book with the college freshman in mind, so it is very approachable and immensely enjoyable. He handles the issues of historicity, textual criticism, along with many of the classical questions of a skeptic with care and clarity. He brings the depth of skillful scholarship to the everyman reader. Get this book. If you're a skeptic, you'll find it illuminating. If you're a believer, you'll find your faith strengthened and deepened.

Mounce Takes On Critics Head On!

Professor Mounce has accomplished what many Bible scholars and teachers avoid: clearly addressing critics of the Bible in plain and logical fashion. The subtitle says it all: "Answers to real questions and doubts people have about the Bible." (I would add, "that regular people" have.) The book is not written as a theology textbook, for an audience of scholars speaking of irrelevant factoids. Dr. Mounce explains, like all great teachers do, how and why he personally believes in his subject matter. I recommend this book without reservation.

He brings the reader along on a calm, logical and thorough introduction to this somewhat overwhelming collection of writings, assembled over thousands of years, in three (3) languages. He introduces us to the primary critics and their points of criticism. He explains the basis for their arguments and his basis for rebuttal. He gives the reader insights into the art and science of determining reliability of manuscripts and translating them into English.

Matters of "faith" cannot be proven, like matters of mathematics and some aspects of physics. Matters of "trust," however, can be proven to a satisfactory degree by facts, source documents, translations, and intelligence. Dr. Mounce does not propose that the reader "check her/his brain" at the door and believe in the Bible by faith, alone. He does an excellent job of engaging our brains in education, thus strengthening the basis upon which faith may be solidified.

I particularly enjoyed Dr. Mounce recording the narration of the Audible version himself. Reading the printed word has always been challenging for me. I purchased the Audible copy, then a hard copy (to make marginal notes and highlighting) and finally the Kindle version to read in waiting rooms. Even those who distrust the value and origin of the Bible may find the basis of their distrust is based on faulty scholarship and misreading of the original languages. For those who already trust the Bible, this book serves to solidify their confidence that it is not a collection of highly edited sales pitches, crafted "in a smoke filled room" relatively recently.
