Publisher's summary

In this compelling third saga of The Black Series, Joan Vassar returns to Upper Canada,1862. While on a mission with the legendary Black, James comes face to face with a dark beauty enslaved on the Mickerson plantation. Freedom and love are within his grasp, until ill-fated circumstances separate the two. When he is severely wounded in a violent uprising, James’ life is forever changed. Scarred both physically and emotionally, he tries to put behind him the failures of the last year.

When life at the fort is threatened, James and his brothers are called upon for a dangerous mission that could jeopardize their hard-earned freedom. The men embark on a treacherous journey that will take them to the Union Capital and then on to their final stop: The Hunter Plantation, where bitter enemies and reckonings await payment. As the men follow a path of murder and intrigue, who will live and who will die remains to be seen.

Emancipating James reveals the complicated facets of the human soul exposed against the backdrops of Civil War, slavery, and romance.

Perfectly matched!

The strength and resilience of the male and female characters make this a wonderful experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling by Joan Vassar. The detail of daily life, the risks for freedom, and the family dynamics certainly kept me engaged and listening. The narrator, Jakobi Diem, does amazing work with the varying personalities and the change from male to female is a seamless and smooth transition. I love his voice for this series. I look forward to the next production.

Captivating.

Ms. Joan Vasser does it again. I am so in awe of the stories about Black and his brothers. Ms. Vasser takes us on a ride in every book and this one is no different. There are characters you love, characters you hate and characters you hate but then grow to love. This book centers around James and his battle with the “Black Cracker” who shot him in the face in the previous book. There were a couple of slow moments but the overall story makes up for that. I am definitely adding this to my all time favorite series. And I’ve said it once but I’ll say it again..I didn’t even think I like historical fiction but with this series, I see how wrong I was! I highly recommend if you’re looking for a great read!

I’m instantly sad

Well I just finished listening to Emancipating James and I am instantly sad. Forlorn, even. I miss life on the fort already! I had already read and absolutely LOVED the book, but Jakobi Diem brought this book to life in a way that really knocked my socks off! I love absolutely EVERYTHING Joan Vassar writes and this is no exception. I will say, however, that her writing does make me want to climb into her books and live the fort life she has so magnificently created. I wish it was real! Ms Joan, I don’t even know you and I love you! Your creativity is unmatched! I love all of your characters, even the ones I don’t like! I am waiting on your next body of work in tip toe anticipation! READ THIS BOOK!!
