Publisher's summary

From the former editor-in-chief of Real Simple, enjoy this hilarious and deeply insightful take on the indignities of middle age and how to weather them with grace: "A pure pleasure to read" (Cathi Hanauer, author of Gone).

Do you hate the term “middle age?” So does Kristin van Ogtrop, who is still trying to come up with a less annoying way to describe those years when you find yourself both satisfied and outraged, confident and confused, full of appreciation but occasional disdain for the world around you. Like an intimate chat with your best friend, this mostly funny, sometimes sad, always affirming volume from longtime magazine journalist van Ogtrop is a celebration of that period of life when mild humiliations are significantly outweighed by a self-actualized triumph of the spirit. Finally!

Featuring stories from her own life, as well as anecdotes from her unwitting friends and family, van Ogtrop encourages you to laugh at the small irritations of midlife: neglectful children, stealth insomnia, forks that try to kill you, t.v. remotes that won’t find Netflix, abdominal muscles that can’t seem to get the job done. But also to acknowledge the things you may have lost: innocence, unbridled optimism, smooth skin. Dear friends. Parents. It’s all here: the sublime and the ridiculous, living together in the chapters of this book as they do in your heart, like a big messy family, in this no-better-term-for-it middle age.

Pretty good.

As a woman of a certain age, Kristin gets all the things exactly right. Her take on life is extremely relatable. Her reading of her work is ok. She doesn’t get the cadence and inflections just right. I probably would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the hard copy.

Loved this book!!

Perhaps because I am of the same age or maybe because I have the same sense of humor, but I truly enjoyed this book. I haven’t been able to stop telling my girlfriends to read it. And I am so sad it has ended. From Kristin’s personal stories to timely and appropriate quotes, I was captivated. A must read/listen!

Thank you, I’m glad I selected this audio!

The author said a lot of thing a I been thinking. I will be fifty-two this year. There are so many that she spoke on that made me feel, I was not alone in what I felt. This makes sense to me. I haven’t carried a large hand bag since my youngest son turned 5 y/o. I just stick my I’d and bank cards in my front pocket and keep up moving. I enjoyed this reading. This was an eye open book. So much advise to consider. I will be listening again . I love it.

Fascinating

Relatable but also very insightful thoughts on ageing, family, and life. The performance was wonderful (which sometimes is not the case when it's the author reading). Very much worth your time.

I’ve read it three times

This book is funny in that droll kind of way that makes you laugh at the familiarity of life’s situations and how we can always laugh at them… even if it’s months later. I always return to it while working in the yard or on a road trip. Kristin has a way of making me nod in agreement over all the nuances in a marriage, in family life, and even in the stupid situations that make our lives worth plodding through.
