Publisher's summary

When the past rises, the world burns.

Newly conscripted into the Emperor's dragon corps, Tate Fisher is still trying to figure out all that her new position entails. Along with an elevation in status comes dangerous enemies. Enemies who would rather see the dragons fall into ruin than remain in their current place of power.

When a dragon goes missing, followed by a child close to her, Tate is forced to confront the hidden agendas of those in the highest seats of authority. Her search for the truth takes her deeper into the maze of tunnels that lie beneath the city. It's a place where secrets lurk and dangers abound.

There, she'll uncover a plot whose origins stretch all the way back to the beginning of this world-one that can only end in the destruction of everything she knows and loves. The key to saving her city lies in her uncertain past. If only she could remember what that was.

So tired of Ryu

Why is Tate attracted to Ryu (beyond the physical)? Why does she trust him at all? How did Ryu become so attached to Tate from the get-go? Why is Tate so okay with Ryu casually touching and physically manipulating her? Why is everyone so okay with Ryu having any sort of authority over Tate given his obvious obsession?

This relationship makes no sense and has the same dynamics as T.A. White's Aileen Travers, a relationship I also detest.

Like Aileen Travers, I'm also tired of Tate's insistence on secrets and keeping information to herself for the sake of plot development.

All that being said, I enjoyed the story and, aside from the narrator's overuse of whispering, enjoyed the performance.

Another great story by this author. In this story the author includes more dragons which was fun to read about.

Enjoyed mid point in series.

Some secrets revealed, a mystery to solve and more interaction with the dragon corps. This book sets the stage for the remainder of the series. I love this author and her creative world building. Her lead characters are unique and strong with a desire to protect. There is a developing romance which is not the main storyline. This is a good series so far. Looking forward to book 4. This is last book in audio as of today. Narration was good. Pacing good. I listened at 1.25x.

One of my favorite authors.

This author is great at world building and creating characters you root for. Kick ass heroine with the right amount of empathy for others and great side characters. I loved what the author did with Willa and Pax and the direction their characters are going. There is a great underlining mystery of trying to figure out who Tate really is. And a very slight bump in the romance department, no sex. Narrator does a great job; her dry wit pulls of Tate perfectly.

If you enjoy this series, I recommend reading Ilona Andrews series, any would do as they are all great. Also, the other series by this author are equally as good.

Love it! Please write more!

I love the lead protagonist and her motley hoard. The world building is wonderful and the character development and relationships dynamics - you’ll fall in love and want to be part of Tate’s hoard, too.
