Publisher's summary

A raw and poignant memoir of a daughter’s journey from a difficult upbringing in rural Alabama to a fulfilling life as a wife and mother with a successful career far beyond the limitations of her upbringing, Mildred J Mills describes unimaginable highs like becoming a fashion model, beauty pageant winner, and corporate American executive, and devastating lows like the horror of gang rape as she simultaneously conveys deep love and respect for most of those who hurt her.

Surprisingly Compelling

But I should not have been surprised. I know Mildred Mills.

For a brief time, she was my direct supervisor at the unnamed Houston software company that unjustly demoted and fired her without cause -- something I did not know at the time. I was one of 250 employees who were "downsized" during the reorganization that happened about then. Now that I know the story, I am not so upset at my firing: They fired somebody worth a lot more than me! I wonder whether they ever realized how much their blindness cost them.

The people who so badly mistreated her could have done so only because they never actually SAW her. I did see her. When I met her, I had no idea of the struggles she had endured to rise from beginnings far humbler than my own to take a position of power and influence. Even so, I could tell immediately that she was impelled by a primal force. For a time, while listening to this book, I wondered how anybody could fail to recognize that crossing Mildred, rather than being her friend, is tantamount to throwing away a winning lottery ticket.

Now that I have heard the whole story, I see the source of that primal force that has driven her all her life: Her faith in God. She has proved the validity of Jesus' counsel that we must love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. That she succeeded in reconciling with two parents who, in different ways, had treated her so despicably -- that success is a tribute to her character and to the grace of her loving God.

Though this story tours through some of the seamier aspects of human life, it is nonetheless a tale of redemption, reconciliation, and strength overcoming insurmountable obstacles.

It makes me proud to have known this remarkable lady, if only for the short time we worked together.

Power of spirit and forgiveness

Ms Mills’s writing is evocative and her story is haunting. The opening scenes in the book and the childhood in Alabama are a powerful portrayal of conditions African Americans endured in the south: crushing poverty, racism and lack of resources for betterment. All through the book the author’s indomitable spirit is inspiring both as a woman and a woman of color. We can all take lessons from Ms. Mills in standing tall, enduring and prevailing despite tremendous odds. I was deeply touched by her love and devotion to her parents. A definite read for all. Lastly, congratulations on the debut as a published author. I eagerly look forward to reading more books by this author.

A True story of Love, loss & forgiveness

I really enjoyed this narration of the life of Mildred Mills and her triumphant story of her life, told with every emotion of a little child, now adult, learning life’s lessons of life, love and forgiveness, just as God would want us all to observe and practice. Wow! A beautiful life indeed, God would be so proud.
