Publisher's summary

When his best friend and fellow Navy SEAL, Evan Prescott, died in his arms on the battlefield, Logan Kincaid gave his word to watch over Evan's widow. But for two years he kept his distance...torn between honoring his solemn vow and succumbing to his secret love for his fallen comrade's wife. But when Dani Prescott desperately reaches out to Logan for the help only he can give, he rushes to her side - determined to fight for her safety as fiercely as he fights against his own buried desire.

Someone claiming to be her husband is stalking Dani and her infant daughter, making them virtually prisoners in their remote country home. Logan's elite military training and high-risk security expertise have outmatched more dangerous enemies. But the real challenge will be the burning temptation that threatens to overcome Logan whenever Dani is near... especially when she reveals her own hidden passion.

good intro to new author

I enjoyed the story line and twists. The Characters are really likable. I'm not overly fond of 2 narrators. But they both did pretty good.

Outstanding, exciting, heart stopping, suspenseful

What an intense plot with suspense, action, danger and romance. Two Navy SEAL were best friends both see a girl and both fall for her within minutes. The one who saw her first got the girl, the friend wouldn’t have stood in the way but lord how he wanted her. He loves her from afar for many years, watching as she and his friend build a life together, being happy for them but still wishing he was her man. Years go by they are on an op that goes bad with bad Intel leaving one dead and the other wishing he was. He made a promise to take care of his friend’s wife who he just found out was pregnant. Feeling that he was the reason his friend died and wishing he could have taken his place, he did his duty by her but never went to see her. The guilty is slowly killing him. Time goes on, and he gets a call for help from her, he made a promise he must keep. What he finds is a crazy man saying that he is her husband but all know that cannot be for he died in his arms. What follows is a story that will make your hair stand up as one stranger tries his best to get the woman and her child for his own.

The narrators did an outstanding job pulling the reader in, I found no volume change as one ended and the other took over. They both really put emotion into their characters giving a very entertaining listen. It was very easy to know who was talking and what they were feeling, their many different character voices were outstanding making you feel like you are right there watching the scenes unfold. There are no repeating of words, no background noises and no volume changes. My heart beat fast as danger was near, they really pulled off a heart stopping listen that held me captivated from beginning to end.

The author knows her stuff from the danger, excitement, suspense and romance. My heart went out to both of these characters for so many years they lost as well as the love one they both lost. I found myself smiling, laughing and almost in tears a few times. I can’t tell you just how much the story touched me. The plot is wonderful with many twists and turns that hold your attention. It was a story I didn’t want to end, I fell so in love with these characters and all they had to go through. It really pulls on your heartstrings in so many ways. I will listen to this again and have picked it for one of my favorite listens this year.

A solid feel good romance - the series has promise

This novel purports to be the first in a series. The stalker plot is solid and has medium level of conflict and tension. I like they way Owens evolves the story in that is not heavy handed in either message or foreshadowing; she also places a good deal of emphasis on developing the hero.

The novel is written for two view points: Dani (widower) and Logan. The narrator offers a solid performance. If you enjoy you romance with a touch of a thriller, then this novel is for you. Give it a read.

Preferred her other books

I struggled to finish this book. Toward the end of the book I liked Logan... but for most of it he annoyed me. I've read/listened to another series of hers that I liked, so I'll try the second in this series to see if it gets better.

Narrators ruined this

I physically cringed listening to these 2 individuals. No talent. Completely awful.
I’m sure audible can afford to pay for better narrators.
Shake that they ruin a good story.

Good start to the series :)

3-3.5 stars

This was a good story. I might even go as far as to say it was pretty good but I was really torn on the rating...if I could rate it at an even 3.5 stars I would have. I liked Dani and Logan but there were a lot of issues for them to get through to find happiness together. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough that I might try more of her work in the future.

Dani is an author and a widow of a Navy SEAL. She lost her husband around 2 years ago and gave birth to her baby, Reagan, shortly after he died. Life was rough for Dani but she got through things alright and was relatively content in her life until she found out she has a stalker...one pretending to be her husband.

Logan is a Navy SEAL and was best friends with Dani's late husband, Evan. He felt responsible for the op that went wrong that ended up killing Evan and couldn't bring himself to visit Dani after Evan's death, even though he promised Evan he'd look out for her. His reluctance was partially due to his guilt over Evan and partially it was because of the fact that he's been in love with Dani for years but felt it was wrong for him to feel that way because Dani is/was Evan's wife.

Regardless of any guilt over his feelings for Dani or Evan's death, when Logan hears that Dani needs him he immediately heads out to help her. When he gets there and realizes that she has a stalker, Logan decides he'll have to stay with Dani and Reagan for safety. It's rough on him though because Logan is confronted with the feelings for Dani that he's kept buried for years. Logan had promised Evan he'd look out for Dani but he really wants to become more integral to her life and he doesn't feel he has the right to go there. Also, with the issues Logan grew up with, he doesn't feel like he's good enough for Dani and he's sure someone else would be a better match for her...just as long as he's not around to see it.

Dani has had 2 years to get over Evan's death and when Logan comes around she discovers an attraction to Logan that wasn't apparent before. She's interested in exploring it more but isn't sure how to take Logan's behavior since he seems to want her one minute and not want anything to do with her the next. Logan loves Reagan right off and vise versa so Dani is happy about that and it helps to soften her toward Logan, even when he's not behaving the best. The stalker story is there but most of the story revolves around Logan and Dani and them trying to come to terms with their relationship or whether they'll even have a relationship or not. It seems that just when one issue is resolved another one comes up but there is some steady progress made in that regard. Things aren't completely resolved when the stalker makes his move but it actually helps them to realize that they shouldn't be focusing on the little crap that doesn't really make a difference so once the danger is past, Dani and Logan are able to come together for a nice HEA together.

This was an enjoyable story. Dani and Logan were both likable characters, The obstacles in their way to happiness weren't huge but were bad enough that they caused some definite angst while the couple tried to figure things out. The story was good overall and had a decent pace so I never felt bored. I may try more of the series in the future.

* note - There were 2 narrators, a female for the parts from Dani's PoV and a male for the parts from Logan's PoV. I thought both narrator s did a very good job.

Enjoyed it, but...

I enjoyed the overall story, but I have found that as I get older, I have very little patience for all the "man/woman" bullcrap...all the "OH YES! oh, wait, NO! oh touch me, oh, get away from me"...ugghh. The ridiculousness of all of that does take away from being able to really enjoy the story. I hate head games in real life & in books as well.
