"Sure it's just a celebrity type of thing - they only gave it to me because I'm famous." Leary explains. "But it's legal and it means I get to say I'm a doctor - just like Dr. Phil."
In Why We Suck, Leary's famously smart style and sardonic wit have found their fullest and fiercest expression yet. Zeroing in on the ridiculous wherever he finds it, Leary unravels his Irish Catholic upbringing, the folly of celebrity, the pressures of family life, and the great hypocrisy of politics with the same bright, savage, and profane insight he brought to his critically acclaimed one-man shows No Cure for Cancer and Lock 'n Load, and his platinum-selling song, Asshole..
Proudly Irish American, defiantly working class, with a reserve of compassion for the underdog and the overlooked, Leary delivers blistering diatribes that are penetrating social commentary with no holds barred. Leary's work will find wide appeal among people who want to laugh out loud or find a guide who matches their view of what's wrong in America and the world-at-large; and fans of his one-man shows, his many movies, and Rescue Me, Leary's Golden Globe and Emmy - nominated television show. Why We Suck is the latest salvo from one of America's most original and biting comic satirists.

Ah.... No one else could have narrated this book. If you loved No Cure for Cancer and Mr. Leary's other endeavors you will absolutely love Why We Suck. Laugh yourself silly and enjoy.
I expected a long rant followed by evidence of "why we suck." Instead we get an intro, with warning, then a bunch of stories from Denis' life and a few rehashed jokes from his stand up acts. Overall, it's not terrible but still disappointing.
Enjoying history, biography, and other well-crafted non-fiction.
This audiobook is filled with ranting and nuggets of "wisdom" very similar to his popular comedy albums 'No Cure for Cancer' and 'Lock 'n' Load'. The best part is that it is much longer than those albums...and he put Dr. in front of his name.
IT was a good listen but if your looking for Denis Leary to go into his comedy act just because he's reading the book then you will be disappointed. It's a more series, none shallot telling of his life and an insight into his mind. A good listen when on a car drive
I'd listen to Dennis Leary every day. He tells the truth like it should be told. If more people would wake up and listen to what he has to say, maybe we wouldn't suck.
He's honest and doesn't apologize for it.
It was like he was talking not just reading the book
I would have if I had the time. But I have a life
It was not long enough.
I was surprised by how much I liked Denis Leary as a human being in this book. I had been unsure about how I felt about Leary outside of "Rescue Me", (which I loved), but he comes off as a very genuine and real person. Passionate about family, life, performance, and even the state of the country.
I have not heard any performances such as this before by him.
Yes it was, though I was admittedly on a 10 hour drive.
Denis is the only author that I've listened to who makes it feel like he was sitting beside you on your living room couch telling you his childhood story. I listen do this book when I'm on my 27 hr road trip and it's a great way to kill 5 hours. You don't even realize that the time has gone. Very entertaining. My only hope is that he writes another.
I laughed so hard during his mom's "cooking" recipes! I was laughing so hard that I called my sister and turned up my speakers for her to listen. She informed me that during the "Thanksgiving portion" of the book she was laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes! This book takes me back to my childhood and how my mom, grandparents and brothers all were.
I've read the book twice and listened to the audiobook 4 times. It never gets old!
Made me laugh so hard I was crying!
Great book. Worth the price and also to read as well
I am constantly on the road and a voracious reader, so audiobooks are a must!
Dr. Leary at his angry and sarcastic best examining exactly why we, as Americans, suck. The only complaint I had was this book is abridged. Still, it is wickedly funny and very well read by the author.
If you're a fan of Denis Leary, you will enjoy this book. If you're bent on hating the man, don't waste your money. He is uncensored and pissed.
