Publisher's summary

Beckett Rousseau is the firstborn son of one of New Orleans’ most prominent families. He’s the quintessential golden boy—great looks, money, and a political career in his future—until his wife murders him. Or at least that’s what everyone thinks.

Athena Durand is still reeling from her murder conviction, but now that it’s overturned, she’s at a loss on how to proceed with her life. As long as people still believe she’s guilty, she has no future in Louisiana and more importantly, she wants to know who killed her husband. When she hears about Fortune’s exploits, Athena knows she is the one person who might be able to give her answers and her life back. But too many people are harboring secrets about Beckett’s life and death, including Athena.

Can Fortune sort through the half-truths and lies to discover the truth? Or did the jury get it right the first time?

Better than most

I enjoyed this book more than the majority of books in this series because there actually seemed to be some progression and better use of the characters that have usually been wasted in the background. For one Ally finally starting her bakery and getting a little romance going was awesome and a great addition to the series. Also i never liked how the author seemed to poke fun at Ronald and make him a weird idiot thats rude and nosey seemingly because he liked to dress in drag. Like the way she wrote about it was like he was a weirdo and seemed pretty bigoted. So i appreciate how hes taking a bigger role in the storys now and became friends with the trio. Everybody loves the gay best friend. The mystery aspect of the book was lacking as per usual. The actual crime wasnt the issue but more the execution of solving it. Fortune is supposedly a brilliant detective and always has some big revelation at the end of the book but while investigating and for example listing all the reasons behind someone doing something or an event that transpired they usually leave out obvious reasons or possible motives like the author is trying to keep that part in the dark so she wont mention it. A good mystery author (like T. E Kinsey and the lady hardcastle cozy mysterys for example) has their characters list ALL the possible reasons and then have them try and figure out how to prove and disprove different theorys. Turning a blind eye to an obvious solution just to make figuring out the mystery take longer is just sloppy writing... Also shes not really good at easing into the reveal by gaining little tidbits of information and getting a clearer picture every step along the way. Instead we just get an info dump at the end when some innocuous thing triggers the solution to EVERYTHING in fortunes mind in great detail. Its just absurd. The characters are fun and entertaining, especially now that shes bringing previously background characters more into the spot light, but the plot and execution needs alot of work. Another thing that bugs me is the fact that carter irrationally keeps trying to get Fortune to "stay out of police business" when he KNOWS shes not going to and if they worked together (her as a police consultant because THAT IS A THING) they could get alot more achieved. 2 heads are better than one and all that. Well 4 is better than 3. Its just ridiculous and makes everything seem less genuine and real. It just seems so obvious that the author is detracting from the genuineness of the story by trying to keep things the same way as they always have been even when things change such as her and carters relationship, the fact that shes a licensed PI now, and how carters knows her, ida bell and gertys background info so KNOWS shes capable. If the author wants an evil cartoon villain for them to skirt around so much then add some new ones. She always needs to have some mustache twirling d bag in the story thats impossibly unpleasant to the extent of it being completely unrealistic just so they can triumph over them. Celia is the one used the most often but theres new ones from time to time. It all just seems sophomoric, shallow and scripted. I know its a book and the whole things scripted but a good book will make you forget that your reading a book. The dialogue flows and the characters lives are deep and engaging and BELIEVABLE. Anyone want to get into a GREAT cozy mystery series instead of this medicore one, check out the Lady Hardcastle cozy mysterys. Well worth the time and money. They are Amazing. The Zion Sawyer cozy mystery series is good too and u can buy all the books together in a boxed set. Then Samantha true wasnt as good but still better written than this series.

Really engaging

I really enjoy these stories even though I get a little anxious about how reckless the main characters are about their driving and use of guns (yes, I know it’s just a story but occupational hazard. . .) The only thing I didn’t care for is how judgmental they tend to be. (It’s a character trait I also was turned off by in an earlier book -can’t remember the name of it right now.)

The Best

I thoroughly enjoy the Fortune books. It’s relaxed and laughable listening, and we all need that.

2 Fives and a Four

Entertaining as always. I love the way she brings in all the local area residents to play a part in her stories and continues to build a community.
I gave the story four stars this time because there was too much comedy before we had a lot of tension. I think those hilarious moments are funnier when they come at the most inopportune times, But that’s just my personal opinion,
Cassandra Campbell is the best narrator for the series. I just love her!
Also, PLEASE keep those books coming.

the humor is always there

I like most aspects about all these books, but why did the narrator change how Herbert was pronounced? it messed with the flow for me, but there stories are always interesting.
