Publisher's summary

In New York Times bestselling author Anthony Horowitz’s ingenious fifth literary whodunnit in the Hawthorne and Horowitz series, Detective Hawthorne is once again called upon to solve an unsolvable case—a gruesome murder in an idyllic gated community in which suspects abound.

Riverside Close is a picture-perfect community. The six exclusive and attractive houses are tucked far away from the noise and grime of city life, allowing the residents to enjoy beautiful gardens, pleasant birdsong, and tranquility from behind the security of a locked gate.

It is the perfect idyll, until the Kentworthy family arrives, with their four giant, gas-guzzling cars, gaggle of shrieking children, and plans for a garish swimming pool in the backyard. Obvious outsiders, the Kentworthys do not belong in Riverside Close, and quickly offend every last one of the neighbors.

When Giles Kentworthy is found dead on his own doorstep, a crossbow bolt sticking out of his chest, Detective Hawthorne is the only investigator they can call to solve the case.

Because how do you solve a murder when everyone is a suspect?

Great Addition to the Series!

I'm loving this series. This story adds depth and background to Horowitz/Hawthorn relationship. I won't give anything away about the mystery but I will say it's interesting and perplexing. Definitely memorable. And Rory Kinnear's performance is outstanding!

Fascinating plot & Great narration

Loved learning more about Hawthorn. I was kept guessing until the very end. Love the series. Hope it continues beyond book 7.

Just keeps getting better!

To be honest I was a little concerned with the beginning. However, the story quickly picks up and left me speechless. Fans of the series will not be disappointed.

Least good of a great series

Missed the interplay between Horowitz and Hawthorne. The timeline was confusing. The character of Dudley was too opaque. Hawthorne is a fascinating character, especially as he interacts with suspects but was offstage for long stretches. Here is hoping for more H and H direct dialogue going forward in the future installments of this great series.

Great reading, very good story

Rory Kinnear nails the vibe of these stories. This was one of Horowitz’s least challenging murder mysteries to guess, but the reader did an outstanding job of bringing the characters of the Close to life and showing us that the story was, and always is, about Hawthorne’s world. The rest of us live and die in it.

so much fun to listen to

The literary device he uses where he is a character in his own book just makes it really interesting. And I really like the narrator . I look forward to the next seven!
